Parent, Cooney direct Gloucester City wrestling past Penns Grove

(DECEMBER 20, 2018)--The Gloucester City High wrestling team kicked off the regular season Thursday after a rough showing at the Vogeding Tournament in Paulsboro last Screen Shot 2018-12-14 at 14.12.04weekend.

Although there is no team title awarded at the tournament, the Lions finished seventh in the nine-team field. Thursday’s opponent, Penns Grove, finished a spot ahead of the Lions in Paulsboro.

“We were concerned,” head coach Tom McConnell said. “We kept a bunch of guys out of the Paulsboro Tournament because of a lot of health-related reasons. So this being their first match was a concern for me, especially against a tough team with tough kids. But we practiced well. They wanted to bounce back this week, so we felt pretty comfortable coming in.”

Behind key wins by juniors A.J. Parent and Derron Cooney, Gloucester City was able to notch its third consecutive win over the Red Devils, winning 45-36 at Rudy Baric Gymnasium in Carneys Point.

“I felt pretty good coming into the match,” said Cooney who pinned Felix Figueroain 3:22 at 220 pounds. “I know we have some young guys, but they are solid, and they are tough. We take pride in our toughness and just going out and wrestling no matter what.”
