As we age, drinking alcohol in social gatherings makes us more vulnerable to alcoholism, says Brad Lander, a clinical psychologist and addiction medicine specialist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's Talbot hall and Ohio State's College of Medicine. As we age, it takes longer for the body to break down alcohol. It stays in the system longer. Tolerance also decreases. Excessive drinking can compromise your immune system and can lead to some forms of cancer, " Lander said. It also can decrease the effectiveness of some medications and highly accelerate others, including over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, acetaminophen, sleeping pills and others. Other health risks with aging and alcoholism include: Creating problems with balance and reaction times results in higher frequency of accidents, including falls. Worsening some health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, osteoporosis and liver problems. Developing early-onset dementia. Depression and suicide. Decreased sexual...

Dear supporters, friends, and those interested in the Republican Party of Pennsylvania: As 2018 draws to a close, I want to wish everyone a happy new year and a great 2019. I also hope you all have been able to enjoy time with family, friends, and loved ones over the holiday season. Along those lines, I was glad to see President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump travel to Iraq and other areas overseas to visit our troops. It was easy to see from the photos and videos from their appearances just how much our military respects their Commander in Chief. Under President Trump’s leadership, our armed forces have not only been reinvigorated by finally obtaining new and needed resources for their mission, but have seen tremendous successes in the war on ISIS. Since taking office, President Trump’s focus on providing our troops with what they need to take...

SERGIO BICHAO http://nj1015.com CNBNews graphics file State lawmakers in 2019 will be deciding whether to ban plastic bags from stores and plastic straws in restaurants. In the meantime, more than a dozen local governments in New Jersey have already made the move to turn the common items into contraband. Many of the rules will take effect January or later in the year. In August, Gov. Phil Murphy vetoed a measure that would have imposed a 5-cent fee on carry-out bags, a proposal that was opposed by environmental groups because fees have not done enough to discourage people from using plastic bags in other parts of the country. Environmentalists say the plastic bags and straws are hazards for animals and marine life. Business groups also opposed the measure, as well as the Legislature's newest proposal, but for different reasons. Douglas Kellogg, state projects director at Americans for Tax Reform, called the...

A coalition of media groups led by the First Amendment Coalition (FAC) today filed briefing in the California Supreme Court to oppose a police union’s effort to undermine the effectiveness of a new, landmark police transparency law. The law requires a wide range of records relating to police misconduct to be available to the public—a sweeping change in California law. Prior to the bill’s enactment in September, California was one of a handful of states to bar public access to records surrounding investigations into police shootings and accusations of police misconduct. The law brings California into the mainstream by allowing the public to see records relating to police shootings, instances of sexual misconduct, or acts of dishonesty, such as perjury by police officers. It takes effect on January 1, 2019. However, a San Bernardino County police union is making a last-ditch effort to weaken implementation of the law. On December...

BY CAMILO MONTOYA-GALVEZ ( CBS NEWS ) The incoming congresswoman of the Texas border city of El Paso is warning of an imminent "crisis" as local officials and charities scramble to accommodate at least 1,600 migrants dropped off there by federal authorities in recent days. Representative-elect Veronica Escobar, a Democrat, told CBS News, "We have these teams coming in to play in our Sun Bowl this weekend and the hotels are booked," referring to the college football game El Paso has hosted since 1935. "We're facing a real crisis coming up … to find places for all of these (migrant) families." Escobar said migrants who can't be housed in shelters have been staying in hotel rooms paid by Annunciation House, the non-profit spearheading the efforts to house and feed them. But, she said, if U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues releasing large numbers of migrants, the El Paso community...

Newswise — Traditionally, treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer is chemotherapy followed by the removal of the patient’s entire bladder, known as a radical cystectomy. However, Beaumont researchers have data suggesting that treatment consisting of limited surgery followed by combination chemotherapy and radiation is just as effective, while allowing patients to keep their bladder and maintain function. “This is a big deal. No one wants their bladder removed,” said Craig Stevens, M.D., Ph.D., chairman, Radiation Oncology, Beaumont Health. The surgical approach affects a patient’s quality of life and daily activities. Radical cystectomy is also associated with 67 percent of patients experiencing complications and up to a 2 percent death rate within 90 days of surgery. “Our resident, Dr. David Lin, recently analyzed the National Cancer Database and, through his research, found equivalent outcomes using bladder-preserving approaches as opposed to radical surgery for muscle invasive bladder cancer,” said Daniel Krauss, M.D., Beaumont...

It often begins when companies are employing their staff. Doing a background check with employees is not one of the easy things to accomplish. Initially, it would require filing papers with the national police and waiting for several months as they check through their records for any criminal activities involving any of the staff members. With advancements in technology, however, the...

by Judith Graham/Kaiser Health News John Garland Graves was taken aback when he walked into his McKinleyville, Calif., gym in October and learned that his SilverSneakers membership was being canceled. Since 2014, Graves, 69, has enjoyed free access to the gym through SilverSneakers, the nation’s best-known fitness program for seniors. He was disturbed by the news, as are many other people who have recently learned they’re losing this benefit. A controversial business decision by UnitedHealthcare, the nation’s largest health insurance carrier, is causing the disruption. As of Jan. 1, the company is dropping SilverSneakers — an optional benefit — for 1.2 million customers with Medicare Advantage plans in 11 states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina and Utah) as well as 1.3 million customers with Medicare supplemental (Medigap) insurance in nine states (Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Utah and Wisconsin). Graves, who...

Ian Cruz, 23, of Far Rockaway, was discovered in Bayswater Point State Park last Friday. Police have arrested four people in the gruesome killing, including an unidentified 13-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy. Sources said the teenage girl messaged Cruz online and got him to come meet her for a tryst in the woods sometime between Dec. 15 and 16. Instead, a group of four gangbangers — the girl included — pumped four rounds of .22-caliber ammunition into his head. Investigators believe the foursome used the same femme fatale to ensnare and kill 17-year-old Harold Sermeno — also of Far Rockaway...

Congress could help millions of patients with a simple tax deduction provided for in a bill that could be passed before the lame duck session ends, according to a conservative seniors group. AMAC representatives are in Washington, D.C., in December to persuade lawmakers to get behind the bill....
