You set out for University program specific you would finish in two years. You know your capacity, and you work hard. So, from your end, it was a done deal. However, you started and realized that you were not the sole determinant of the progress of your work. You experienced quite some delays right from the stage of writing the proposal. Such delays included delays in feedbacks, the supply of materials ordered, equipment breakdown among others. In some situations, you are compelled to wait. Sometimes, the delay may be two months to six months or even a year. If such happens, what do you do? You learned over time to capitalize on setbacks, and indeed it is paying off gradually.

1. Read articles in your area

Most times we are so engrossed in lab work that we are unaware of what other researchers are doing in our fields of research. No one is a custodian of ideas. This is a saying that I have experienced. So, delays offer us the opportunity to read and follow recent trends in our fields. The interesting aspect of reading is that you may get ideas for the element of your work that has been challenging or ideas for other research projects.

2. Start writing your thesis

Leaving writing of thesis until your complete lab work may be overwhelming. It may be wise to commence writing while you do lab work. Periods of delays also provide such an opportunity. So instead of moaning and lamenting, spend time writing your thesis.

3. Attend webinars

I only have time to listen to webinars when I take a break from the lab. You may find out your professional bodies organize webinars dealing with a wide range of topics. I have found webinars from American Chemical Society (ACS) and American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) quite provoking and educative. The issues are not about research findings, but the categories are entrepreneurship, business, and innovation; career and personal growth. I have attended webinars on intellectual property, idea generation, and evaluation, Ten Commandments of being a successful researcher. The good thing about these webinars is that the speakers have hands-on experiences. For instance, three days ago I attended a webinar on publishing your scientific research and editors of high impact journals were the speakers. It offered attendees the opportunity to ask questions one may not find on websites of journals.

4. Write academic/research papers

Quite some postgraduate students do intend to continue with research as a career; whether it is in academia or the industry. If you fall into this group, then publications are one of the major requirements as you go up the ladder of your career. So instead of sitting around or investing huge time in social media and other time - consuming sites, you can write papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals. It is possible you have done some substantial work that can be published. By all means, discuss with your supervisor and write the paper. You can also write review papers related to your area of research.

5. Attend training on professional development

Your personal and career development to a large extent is your responsibility and so you ought to seize any opportunities to enhance your skills. I am in academia, and though I have lectured for about three years before University program, I took the chance of a delay to attend workshops on the teaching role, postgraduate supervision; voice and presentations skills. As researchers, we are ever learning and looking for ways to improve ourselves and our productivity. So, seize the opportunity of delays to enhance personal, teaching, presentation, grant writing, and research skills.

6. Community service/pursuing a passion

Pursuing a passion alongside your lab work helps you to keep motivated and energized. Indeed, there are times you are too engrossed in the lab to have time for anything else. But if you encounter a delay, go ahead and get involved in an activity you love. It could be some form of community service or any other passion. At certain periods of delay, I attempted to learn an instrument - a recorder, and when work got hectic, I abandoned it. However, it kept me going and added some excitement in my life then. I also learned how to set up blogs and websites with the internet as my teacher.

One should review the research paper to comprehend the proper institutional format for a research paper. To write good research papers, follow all the steps mentioned above.
