Lower Township Police Arrest Hit and Run Driver for DWI

LOWER TOWNSHIP, NJ--On November 18th, 2018, at approximately 9:21 P.M., the Lower Township Police Department was notified of a hit and run motor vehicle crash that had just occurred on Sunnyside Drive, in the North Cape May section of Lower Township.

Upon arrival to the crash scene, Lower Township Police observed a black in color Ford Taurus sedan with front end damage, parked on Apple Blossom Drive.  Police observed a male and female walking away from the vehicle. The caller then approached officers and advised that the male and female were the occupants of the vehicle involved in the hit and run crash.

The driver was identified as, Edward C. Shaw Jr, of the Del Haven section of Middle Township. Mr. Shaw admitted to operating the vehicle and was subsequently placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated, following field sobriety testing.

Crash investigation revealed that Mr. Shaw had been driving northbound on Sunnyside Drive when he failed to keep right, striking a parked motor vehicle.  The impact caused disabling damage to Mr. Shaw’s vehicle, making his attempts to successfully leave the scene futile.   

The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded in accordance with John’s law.

Mr. Shaw was issued six motor vehicle summonses as a result of the crash: Driving while Intoxicated, refusal to submit breath samples, Driving while Suspended, Reckless Driving, failure to report an accident, and leaving the scene of an accident.

This crash was investigated by Patrol Officers Louis Bartleson and Matthew Gamble, with assistance from Patrol Officers Stephen Flitcroft, Eric Danze and Special Officer Samuel Gellura.
