CNB May 2013 Archives: Computerize Traffic Systems Being Installed on Route 130 & Rt. 68

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Recently workers were installing the ITS at the Market Street and Route 130 intersection in Gloucester City.  The systems will be fully operational by the fall, weather permitting.

Joseph Dee, NJDOT spokesperson explained, “The ITS equipment are being placed in strategic locations to help manage traffic and minimize impact to motorists during

construction of the Direct Connection project.

“One element of the ITS improvements involves Adaptive Traffic Signal Systems which we are installing along Routes 130 and 68.  These systems detect congestion on the mainline or side streets and automatically communicate with the traffic signals to adjust green time to help alleviate the congestion,” he said.

In early March, Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson broke ground on the $160 million Contract 1 which will carry out work along I-295 south of Essex Avenue, along I-76 in the Market Street area and along two Route 42 ramps. Work under this first contract is expected to be completed in the summer of 2015.

Overall, the $900 million federally funded Direct Connection project will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange – through which approximately 250,000 vehicles travel daily to and from Camden, Philadelphia and other destinations. The project has been divided into four separate construction contracts, with completion of the fourth and final contract in the fall of 2021.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
