Chesterfield resident graduates with honors from James Madison University

Thier was among more than 730 students who received undergraduate, master's, educational specialist and doctoral degrees.

Catherine Lacovara Presents Research at UMBC Science Symposium
ANNVILLE, PA (10/26/2018)-- Catherine Lacovara of Mullica Hill, N.J., along with 21 other Lebanon Valley College students, presented research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences at UMBC in October. Lacovara, a graduate of Kingsway Regional High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in biology at The Valley.
Lacovara's poster "Consequences of Early Iron Deficiency and Lead Co-exposure on Dopamine Signaling" received a first-place award.
The symposium seeks to display the diverse array of student-committed endeavors and foster the communication of their relevant novel results and concepts. The event exclusively features undergraduate research in all areas of chemistry, biology, and biochemistry with the understanding that progress at the chemical and biological interface requires cross-fertilization from the broadest possible spectrum of these disciplines.
The event features two poster sessions. Posters are judged by panels of participating mentors and other qualified attendees. Judges rank first and second place posters in each category with non-financial awards presented at the event's end.
Lebanon Valley College is a private, coeducational college in Annville, Pa. The College offers more than 40 undergraduate majors plus self-designed majors and a range of minors, concentrations, and pre-professional options, as well as graduate degree programs in athletic training, business administration, music education, physical therapy, science in STEM education, speech-language pathology, and fully online MBA.
Jonathan Platt of Lumberton Part of UA Team That Places in International Engineering Competition
TUSCALOOSA, AL (10/26/2018)-- For the second consecutive year, The University of Alabama Magnetics and Antenna team placed in the international Student Antenna Design Contest held by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Antenna and Propagation Society. One of the team members is Jonathan Platt of Lumberton, NJ (08048).
The UA team, made up of four electrical and computer engineering students, placed second in the international contest July 8-13 in Boston. The UA team was one of six teams selected as finalists to design an antenna system to sound wireless channels and locate radio signals.
"It was very thrilling to place for the second year in a row," said Katelyn Isbell, an undergraduate student on the UA Magnetics and Antenna team. "Our team was very proud to be able to represent The University of Alabama academically at an international contest."
The objective of this year's competition was to create a portable device that can, in real time, locate a hidden radio transmitter at the frequency of a common Wi-Fi router. Each team submits a final report and video, which contains descriptions and pictures of the designed system, testing results and a list of materials.
The next step for the UA Magnetics and Antennas team will be to publish their findings and file for a patent. The team will also prepare for the upcoming year where they will present their work and compete at the 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation with professors and doctoral students rather than other college teams.
"[I'm] proud of my students," said Dr. Yang-Ki Hong, E.A. Larry Drummond Endowed Chair of Computer Engineering and departmental graduate program director. "They brought our antenna research activities to the high level of worldwide antenna research."
