PALISADES PARK SKIPPED BACKGROUND CHECKS ON ARMED GUARD FOR SCHOOLS, RECORDS SHOW  

Palisades Park officials put armed guards to work in its three schools without conducting Screen Shot 2017-11-28 at 15.20.47 background checks or psychological evaluations, records obtained by The Record show. Documents also show that two guards' handgun cary permits expired earlier this year. Schools Superintendent Joseph Cirillo posted a letter on the district's website Tuesday afternoon saying that the guards, all of whom are retired police officers, have valid firearms permits and have complied with New Jersey's background check laws.

NJ OFFICIALS SPEAK OUT ON NEED FOR GATEWAY TUNNEL 

Gov. Phil Murphy, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez and several members of the state’s congressional delegation used ominous language Tuesday as they called for the Trump administration to provided promised money for the Gateway Tunnel and other infrastructure improvements, NJ Spotlight reports. The officials cited national security and commuter safety as they tried to put pressure on the federal government to provide money for the rail tunnel that would cross the Hudson River in the federal budget that is being drafted. They compared the situation to the Titanic, pointing out that some of the infrastructure dates to the same time period as the ship's disastrous voyage in 1912.

STATE LOOKS TO LIMIT HUMAN-BEAR INTERACTIONS  

The Department of Environmental Protection is increasing its efforts to prevent human-bear interactions in the wake of Gov. Phil Murphy's ban on bear hunting on state-owned lands, the Press of Atlantic City writes. The DEP is assigning additional Division of Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officers leading up to and during the hunt, scheduled for Oct. 8-13 and Dec. 3-8. It is also working with county and local governments to improve waste management to avoid attracting bears.

BIDEN CAMPAIGNING FOR MIKIE SHERILL AT MSU

Former Vice President Joe Biden will be on campus at Montclair State University this afternoon to campaign for Democrat Mikie Sherill, who is running against Republican Jay Webber for Congress, My Central Jersey reports. The race for the 11th Congressional District seat, which is open because of the retirement of Republican Rep. Ronald Frelinghuysen, is drawing a lot of attention as the Democrats try to take control of the House of Representatives. Vice President Mike Pence visited Morris County last month to raise money for Webber.

CLIFTON WOMAN'S COLON-CANCER WARNING GOES VIRAL 

After she received a diagnosis of colon cancer, 32-year-old Jennifer Waller of Clifton made an emotional video in an effort to raise awareness that the disease can affect younger people, NJ.com says. Waller, a nurse and a single mother of two, says she was surprised when the half-minute video she posted on Facebook went viral, with more than 22,000 views and more than 200 shares. Although the American Cancer Society recommends colorectal screenings beginning at age 45, Waller points out that the number of colon cancer cases among people in their 30s has been growing.
