Moorestown Police Alert: Beware of Mailbox Fishing

Moorestown Police are investigating several cases of mail stolen from the blue United States Postal Service curbside collection mailboxes, including those located on Chester Ave. between Main Street and Second Street. The thieves are targeting the mailboxes--"Mailbox Fishing" for mailed checks which are stolen, then altered, and fraudulently cashed. These mail collection box thefts are a widespread issue not confined to the Moorestown area.
The Moorestown Police issued the following alert, "We suggest that if you have mailed checks or will mail checks that you monitor your bank accounts to be sure mailed checks reached their intended destination and were not altered.
"Contact the Moorestown police to report stolen checks or identity theft by calling 856-234-8300. Use the following link to report stolen mail to the Postal Service-- https://emailus.usps.com/emailUs/iq/usps/request.do?forward=emailUs
"We encourage residents to consider using verified online bill payment services or money transfer options offered through your financial institution. If you must mail a check we encourage you to use the mail slot located in a Post Office or hand directly to your mailman."
