ERMA NJ (July 17, 2018)(CNBNewsnet)--Upon arrival of Lower Township officers to the scene of the Cabin City Motel, located at 756 Route 9, Erma, NJ; rooms 8 and 9 of the motel were fully engulfed in flames, with heavy smoke showing. Ptlm. Scheid, SRO Barcas and Sgt. Smith began to evacuate the motel and the rear cottages. For safety reasons, Route 9 was shut down Northbound at Route 109.

Multiple local fire companies arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. Several rescue squads also arrived to assist as well.  The owner of the Cabin City Motel, Timothy Lee, was on scene and provided the officers the name of the tenant of room 8, where the fire started. Lower Township Police made contact with the tenant, Robert Schenck, who was out on a boat fishing and advised him of the incident. Mr. Schenck later arrived on scene and advised the officers that he had left the apartment between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

The Cape May County Fire Marshal’s office arrived on scene to investigate and believed the fire to be accidental at this time.

All occupants of the Cabin City Motel were offered relocation assistance via the American Red Cross. There were no injuries reported due the fire.
