Dawn Watson's Pet Tip of the Week: Enrichment Tools

Dawn Watson | CNBNewsnet

GLOUCESTER CITY NJ (June 30, 2018)(CNBNewsnet)--As part of your family, your dog deserves the best possible life. This includes tools that enrich, challenge, and entertain her. These tools need not be costly; many stimulating toys and games can be fashioned from household items.

Save up toilet paper rolls and make sounds through them. Toss them to your dog and watch him attempt to ‘find’ the noise. Get a laser pointer from the dollar store and use it outdoors at night. Fido will spend hours trying to track it!

A cardboard box turned upside-down with a treat underneath is a great game. Likewise, hiding a favorite toy and praising her when she finds it is a true bonding experience.

When you are out walking, allow your dog to smell flowers. Encourage her to explore sensory objects such as leaves, the bark of trees, and tall grasses. Take the time to hold objects at her eye level and allow her to sniff and feel them gently. Teach her that not every object is a food source or a chew-toy—some things can be experienced gently.

Enjoy your life, together. Your dog is worth your time.
