CNBNews graphics file TRENTON NJ (June 30, 2018)(CNBNewsnet)--With just hours to go before a budget must be signed into law to prevent a government shutdown, Democrats and Republicans in the state Legislature are preparing to override any veto in order to send a clear message to Governor Phil Murphy: it's wrong to force the people of New Jersey to pay higher income, sales and property taxes when Trump billionaire corporations should share the burden for critically needed investments in the state's future. Although Governor Murphy was presented a balanced budget more than a week ago, he has dithered in deciding whether to sign it into law, manufacturing a crisis that threatens a government shutdown. Instead of seriously negotiating with Legislative leaders, the former Goldman Sachs salesman enlisted celebrities to back his call for higher taxes while threatening unspecified cuts targeting people who refuse to go along with his call for...

photos provided An increasing number of brides-to-be are choosing to add axe throwing to their bachelorette party itinerary. This exhilarating group activity sees throwers hurling an axe down a lane in an attempt to hit a bullseye. An integral part of traditional lumberjack competitions, it seems women across the United States and Canada are keener than ever to unleash their inner ‘lumberjill’ ahead of their big day. And they don’t have to look far. More than 30 axe throwing venues now exist across North America, with 2018 seeing a flurry of new openings. With roots firmly placed in Canada, axe throwing has long been an unspoken sport for loggers looking to pass the time while working in woodland. However, many people are unaware that axe throwing is now a serious sport with over 4000 league members in over 50 cities and 5 countries throwing axes competitively under the framework of...

CNBNews graphics file In a morning tweet, the respected head of the Monmouth University Polling Institute precisely identified why Governor Phil Murphy is fighting for higher income, sales and property taxes instead of reforming government spending - it will impact his political supporters and contributors. Pollster Murphy, referring to the CWA’s support for Murphy’s higher taxes, wrote: “Political calculus - makes sense to choose sides (as they made clear months ago). Not only will the CWA negotiate another contract with Murphy in the coming year, but he's the only thing blocking serious pension and benefits reform.” That’s right - despite calling for fundamental pension and benefit reforms when he served as the head of a pension and benefits committee under then-Governor Richard Codey, as Governor, Murphy is fighting tooth and nail against implementing his own recommendations now that he has the power to actually implement them. Governor Murphy is putting...

CNBNews graphics file TRENTON NJ (June 30, 2018)(CNBNewsnet)--NJBIA is extremely disappointed to learn that the budget negotiations that broke down yesterday between the governor and legislative leaders apparently centered on what taxes to increase, instead of what spending to cut. We need to fix the state's structural budget deficits, such as our public pension, health benefits and education costs, rather than attempt to tax our way of our challenges. Proposals such as a millionaires tax and CBT surcharge try to balance the budget on the backs of job-creators. Corporations have 50 states to choose from. We need to make New Jersey more attractive to retain our businesses and capture the investment of new ones so we can gain in our regional competitiveness. Increasing the corporate business tax to be the highest in the nation, in addition to the already high cost of doing business in New Jersey, will not put...

PHILADELPHIA PA (June 29, 2018)(CNBNewsnet) – If authentic, the 699 luxury brand watches that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized Thursday in Philadelphia would hold a manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of nearly $10 million. Instead, they’re headed to destruction. CBP officers seized 699 counterfeit luxury watches with an MSRP of $10 million, if authentic. The express consignment parcel arrived June 11 from Hong Kong, China and was manifested as lithium batteries. When CBP officers inspected the shipment, officers encountered luxury brand watches bearing the name Rolex, Tous, Hublot, Piguet, Panerai, Patek, Fossil, and Harley Davidson. Officers detained the shipment as the craftsmanship was of questionable quality and the packaging was of poor quality. Officers worked with CBP’s Consumer Products and Mass Merchandising Centers for Excellence and Expertise, the agency’s trade experts, who verified through trademark holders that the watches were counterfeit. “This is a significant seizure, both...

CNBNews graphics file Bill SpadeaJune 28, 2018/http://nj1015.com/ You simply should pay higher taxes. After all, let's face it, there's a lotta spending that needs to be done! Elite insiders, special interests and of course the lawyers all need their cut from your bank account. The budget 'compromise' being worked out between the governor and the Legislature after their "pretend fight" is a disaster for every middle- and working-class taxpayer and the small and medium sized companies that employ them. Higher taxes at every level. More spending, more borrowing and a worsening affordability crisis driving more and more of our friends and neighbors out. Can anything be done to course correct our state? You know the saying — keep doing the same thing and expect different results defines insane. CNBNews graphics file Over the course of the next several months I need you to join me in a fight against any extremist nominee to the Supreme Court. We should not vote on a Supreme Court nominee until the American people make their voices heard in the November election. This is the same rule and process Majority Leader McConnell insisted upon when President Obama nominated Merrick Garland. Civil rights, voting rights, reproductive freedoms, LGBTQ rights, environmental protections, and the rule of law are at stake. We've already seen the consequences of Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch. In his short time on the bench, Justice Gorsuch has voted to uphold the President’s Muslim ban, kick Americans off voter registration rolls, and limit the rights of the LGBTQ community. You don't need a crystal ball to know what's to come. Together we must stand strong against the Trump Administration’s radical policies, and...

NJBIA President & CEO Michele N. Siekerka, Esq., issued the following statement Thursday regarding the FY2019 state budget negotiations. "Negotiations are clearly headed in the wrong direction. Instead of focusing on New Jersey's economic competitiveness and jobs, the Legislature is now poised to possibly vote on even more tax increases. "Lengthening the CBT surcharge to four years, extending the sales tax to include vacation rental homes and doubling the realty transfer fee will make New Jersey less affordable and less competitive. "The budget approved by the Legislature on June 21 would give New Jersey the highest corporation business tax (CBT) in the nation: 13 percent for companies with more than $25 million in income and 11.5 percent for companies with more than $1 million in income. Yesterday, the situation went from bad to worse when legislators proposed an additional $360 million in tax increases by changing the two-year sunset provision...

CNBNews graphics file WOODBURY NJ (June 27, 2018)(CNBNewsnet)--A state appeals court has affirmed a prior ruling that the lawyer for Lawrence L. Phil Murphy, whose administration released its own school aid budget in March, and Democratic Senate President Steven Sweeney have threatened a government shutdown if both sides don't agree on a spending plan by the end of this month. The Democratic school aid proposal, advanced Tuesday by the budget committees in the state Senate and Assembly, would add $348 million to school funding, for a total $8.428 billion. Large aid increases would be afforded to districts that have been chronically underfunded under the state’s existing formula. Find your district in the charts below. The legislative proposal is $65 million more...

WESTVILLE NJ (June 27, 2018)(CNBNewsnet)--Yesterday, I had the pleasure of touring the Abilities Solutions, an organization based in Westville, New Jersey, that boosts employment opportunities for the disabled. This place is close to my heart. Sheltered workshops offer employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. They provide a safe work environment that showcases the abilities persons with disabilities possess. That is why I will not allow funding for sheltered workshops to be cut from this year’s budget and why the Legislature’s budget adds $5 million more for them than did the Governor’s. Abilities Solutions is just one example of an organization that would be negatively impacted by the Governor’s originally proposed budget that cut funding to many social service programs, including services for victims of domestic violence, monies for cancer research, prisoner reentry programs and for children with autism. The Legislature’s budget includes an additional $150 million for these and...

CNBNews graphics file Dear Friend: We relish a good fight. Not that we look for it: just as firefighters don't make fires so they can put them out, we don't set cultural fires so we can put them out. But once trouble begins, we swing into action, doing what we can to bring about justice. We are approaching the half-way point of 2018, and so far, so good: we've won some important victories, without any help from others, and we've shared in other victories.Giving to this appeal will ensure that we continue our record of success for the remaining part of the year. No one on TV has been more cruel, and more persistent in his anti-Catholic rants, than Bill Maher. He ended last year in a flurry of hate-filled commentary, mostly ripping our priests. We started a petition drive demanding that HBO officials intervene. Maher's show did not air...
