Governor’s signing of legislation solidifies state as one of the nation’s clean energy leaders

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (May 23, 2018) – Today, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed two pieces of legislation into law solidifying the state as one of the nation’s leaders in clean and sustainable energy. This important action will help drive the development of clean energy projects and initiatives, keep good paying jobs in New Jersey, and create the potential for thousands of new clean energy jobs across the state, while setting the state on a course to take bold action in the fight against climate change.

Atlantic City Electric is part of the Exelon family of companies, the nation’s leading energy provider serving more than 10 million customers in New Jersey, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. As part of Exelon’s merger with Pepco Holdings, the company committed to investing $6.5 million in a workforce development initiative to expand training programs for energy-related jobs. This initiative, which will kick-off this summer, includes five programs (Get Into Energy Math Test and Boot Camp; Women in Sustainable Employment (WISE) Pathway; ACE Line School; High School Energy Career Academy, and County Driven Initiatives) with three vocational schools and four workforce development boards across southern New Jersey.  It will help train the workforce needed to fill these future energy jobs, including the build out of the underlying infrastructure necessary to facilitate the growth of the clean energy economy.

“We applaud Governor Murphy’s commitment to driving a clean and sustainable energy future for all New Jerseyans, and today’s signing is another example of his leadership role in this important policy initiative,” said Dave Velazquez, president and CEO of Pepco Holdings, which includes Atlantic City Electric. “We are committed to partnering with stakeholders across the state to ensure that this legislation leads to the development of new and innovative programs and initiatives that will create new jobs in the energy field and have a positive impact on our customers, our environment and the communities we serve.”

Signing this legislation into law helps transform New Jersey’s clean energy future by allowing for the continued production of emission free nuclear power, enhancing the state’s renewable energy portfolio standards, supporting additional solar and off-shore wind development, and directing the analysis of energy storage opportunities across the state. The laws also include new and aggressive targets for energy efficiency savings and calls on the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development to establish job training programs to support manufacturing and servicing of off-shore wind equipment, all while maintaining affordability for New Jersey’s energy consumers.

Atlantic City Electric’s 560 employees are dedicated to working every day to provide clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to 550,000 customers across southern New Jersey. This work includes; helping more than 26,000 customers connect their solar to the local energy grid; proposing a suite of electric vehicle programs to help customers feel better about transitioning to this clean and efficient form of transportation; supporting several local municipalities and customers with the development of potential microgrid projects; and working to identify how battery storage and other technologies can help advance the future energy experience for customers.
