BW Swimming and Diving Teams Win Second Straight; Olivia Plunkett (Haddonfield) Earns Victory

 

 

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won their second straight dual meet as it defeated Bethany (W. Va.) College in a non-conference dual meet inside the BW Natatorium.

The BW men (2-1) defeated Wilmington (0-2) by a final score of 93-59.   The Yellow Jacket women (2-1) defeated the Bisons (0-2) by a final score of 124-43. The men’s team had six individual champions and one relay winner. The women’s squad posted seven individual champions and two relay winners.

The men’s winners were junior freestyler John Beyer (Columbus/Centennial), sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference stroker Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs), sophomore stroker Austin Lockhart (Olmsted Falls), freshman freestyle Matthew Butt (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf, freshman stroker Kyle Cordrey (Mansfield/Ontario) and freshman stroker Michael Morsch (Phoenix, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory).

Beyer won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:02.02. Shaw took first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 53.80 seconds. Lockhart captured the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 50.62 seconds. Butt brought home the victory in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:07.98. Cordrey won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:16.26. Morsch took first the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.87 seconds.

Earning victories for the women were senior freestyler Lena Kortis (Canton/Massillon Perry, senior stroker Courtney Severns (Bucyrus), sophomore freestyler Jenna Ball (Salamanca, N.Y.), sophomore stroker Shari Gordnier (Centerville/Dayton Regional Stem), sophomore stroker Olivia Plunkett (Haddonfield, N.J.), sophomore freestyler Allie Thorson (Amherst/Marion Steele), freshman stroker Lauren Martello (Huron/Sandusky)

Kortis won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.86 seconds.  Severns captured the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:21.95.  Ball picked up the win in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:21.02. Gordnier took first in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 12:31.08. Plunkett touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:11.52.  Thorson earned the victory in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:03.81.  Martello won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 59.08 seconds.

In relay action, the 200-yard medley relay unit of senior stroker Nicole Gladish (Fairview Park/Fairview), Severns, Kortis and senior freestyler Jordyn Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took first in a time of 2:06.79.  The 400-yard freestyle relay of Ball, Gordnier, Gladish and junior stroker Sarah Krupp (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) touched the wall first in a time of 4:18.82.

BW is back in action on Saturday, November 4 when it travels to North Manchester, Indiana for a non-conference dual meet against Manchester University inside the Strauss-Peabody Aquatics and Fitness Center at 1 p.m.
