$120 MILLION IN UPFRONT LICENSE FEES FOR PENNSYLVANIA FROM LEGAL ONLINE GAMBLING

PlayPennsylvania.com research shows legalized, regulated online gaming and poker will be a win for the state, but unique structure presents obstacles (LAS VEGAS) — Pennsylvania will likely collect $120 million in upfront license fees and stands to collect hundreds of millions of dollars more in tax revenue now that the Keystone State has become the nation’s fourth to legalize and regulate online gambling, according to the recently released white paper by PlayPennsylvania.com: “Pennsylvania Moves to Regulate Online Gambling.” Pennsylvania Gov. Wolf reportedly signed a bill into law on Monday, Oct. 30, that makes makes online gambling legal, and with that signature comes a unique regulatory framework that will set the Keystone State apart from states that already have regulated online gambling, according to the PlayPennsylvania.com report. Substantial upfront license fees and a blended tax rate that is more than double New Jersey’s tax rate are among the key differences in... Read more →

As part of its ongoing environmental program, SJTA erects 20 bat houses (photo)

HAMMONTON, NJ - Oct. 30, 2017 - Inspired by Bat Week that runs from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31, the South Jersey Transportation Authority is erecting at total of 20 bat houses at its three maintenance yards and two toll plazas on the Atlantic City Expressway. Bats play a critical and vital role in the ecology of local environments, even here in South Jersey. Consequently, the SJTA is pursuing ongoing environmental initiatives. In addition to the bat houses that are expected to help... Read more →

Letters to the Editor: Political Malpractice

The New Jersey Education Association's foolhardy campaign to unseat Senator Steve Sweeney is proceeding - and no one is more irate about it than its own members. The state's roughly 200,000 teachers are fuming as their union's officers spend the remainder of an astounding $10 million - to punish a pro-education senator. Political malpractice is what the teachers are calling it. Not to mention reckless, petulant, greedy, and irresponsible. Not only are the NJEA's so-called leaders wasting their dues-paying members' money, they've harmed the election chances of other pro-education candidates, damaged their relationships with longtime allies, and jeopardized the NJEA's legislative agenda for years to come. Steve Sweeney himself, as Senate President, will have an enormous say in that agenda if he's reelected next week. The NJEA might have a case if Senator Sweeney had a lackluster record on education issues. But he's been a staunch advocate for teachers and... Read more →

PRINCIPALS MEET AND FOCUS ON BEST PRACTICES

Written by Mary Beth Peabody Principals from South Jersey Catholic elementary schools gathered in Cape May on Oct. 11-12 for their annual professional development conference. They spent the better part of two days sharing best practices and developing new strategies related to their work as administrative and instructional leaders. “Our principals inspire me,” said Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mary Boyle. “They bring passion and dedication to their work and to our gatherings. Their commitment to the mission of Catholic education is unrelenting.” Unlike their public school counterparts, Catholic school principals need to recruit new families and keep current families in the fold. They are responsible not only for academics, but for faith formation and spiritual growth. With tuition well below the actual cost to educate each student, principals wear a fundraising hat and manage tight budgets. Most schools have an advancement director to support many of the non-academic activities that... Read more →

CNB January 2013 Archives: Fire School Officials For Suspending Kindergartner!

It is time to immediately boot all school administrators who had any involvement in Christoper Freind suspending a five year old kindergartener from the Mount Carmel Area Elementary School in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. And we should require that their official employment records always --- ALWAYS --- disclose the exact reason why they were terminated. Hopefully, such a scarlet letter would prove so weighty that their education careers would sink into oblivion. Come to think of it, they should be barred from ever working around children again. Judgment, discretion and common decency are --- or at least should be --- mandatory skills for those working around our young people, but appear to be nonexistent in the Mount Carmel District. And what was the child’s offense? What was so ignominious, so dastardly, so outright diabolical that the... Read more →

Curbing corruption in Philadelphia | Commentary | phillytrib.com

Former District Attorney Seth Williams was sentenced on Tuesday to five years in prison for accepting a bribe. The sentencing was the latest chapter in a sad and disappointing story of a career prosecutor who was once seen as a rising political star. But Williams’ two terms as Philadelphia’s first Black D.A. ended in a corruption scandal. An investigation into Williams’ financial affairs resulted in a wide-ranging indictment in which he was charged with 29 counts of bribery, extortion and fraud including accepting cash and gifts, fraudulently using thousands of dollars from his campaign fund for personal expenses, misusing city vehicles and misappropriating money intended to fund his mother’s nursing home care. Two weeks into his June trial, Williams pleaded guilty to a single count of accepting a bribe from a businessman who admitted giving him a $3,000 sofa and thousands of dollars in cash payments. Prosecutors said Williams admitted... Read more →

CNB Hunting/Fishing NJ: Blueline Tilefish: A Profile

by Tom Sanfilippo, Hourly Fisheries Technician Bureau of Marine Fisheries October 27, 2017 Common Name: Blueline Tilefish, Grey Tilefish Scientific Name: Caulolatilus microps Background: Blueline Tilefish are frequently caught as bycatch by long liners and charter/party boats fishing for Golden Tilefish. Tilefish in general are relied upon on to "save a trip" meaning that the catch of a tilefish by anglers fishing for species like tuna can still make the trip worthwhile, even if the original target species is not biting. Management: As tilefish are non-migratory, they become very susceptible to the pressures of over fishing. Previously, Blueline Tilefish had no regular federal regulations for fish caught north of Virginia, as the fishery is data deficient in the Mid-Atlantic region. Because of this and the increasing number of catches, an interim fishery management plan was set in place in June 2016 to limit the number of tilefish caught and prevent... Read more →

An Open Letter to the NFL players disrespecting our Flag and Country

You graduated high school in 2011. Your teenage years were a struggle. You grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Your mother was the leader of the family and worked tirelessly to keep a roof over your head and food on your plate. Academics were a struggle for you and your grades were mediocre at best. The only thing that made you stand out is you weighed 225 lbs and could run 40 yards in 4.2 seconds while carrying a football. Your best friend was just like you, except he didn’t play football. Instead of going to football practice after school, he went to work at McDonalds for minimum wage. You were recruited by all the big colleges and spent every weekend of your senior year making visits to universities where coaches and boosters tried to convince you their school was best. They laid out the red carpet... Read more →

Commodities Fraud Sentencing, Word of Warning to Investors: Do Your Due Diligence

Self-professed investment professional Pedro Jaramillo was a pro at promoting himself and his financial prowess. Through a slickly produced online video, phony office space on Wall Street, and promises of unrealistic financial returns, this Peruvian national living in New York managed to convince more than two dozen investors to trust him with more than $1.2 million of their hard-earned money. Jaramillo, however, never invested a dime of their money—instead, he used it to line his own pockets and keep his Ponzi scheme going. Even his claim to be an investment professional was false—he wasn’t licensed to do anything remotely connected to financial advising and/or investing. But, as with most Ponzi scheme operators, Jaramillo eventually ran out of funds to keep his fraud scheme afloat, and two unhappy investors reported their concerns to the FBI. After an intensive investigation by the FBI’s New York Field Office—in close coordination with the U.S.... Read more →
