More than half of New Jersey’s school districts have shrunk over the last six years as the population continues to move toward urban areas or out of the state altogether. Elinor Comlay of Route 40 looks at the parts of the state where the most shrinkage is occurring, and attempts to figure why this is happening.

VILLAGE GREEN OBTAINS MAPLEWOOD POLICE AUDIO TAPES


The Village Green has been following the story of alleged racial profiling of local teens by Maplewood police officers for more than a year. This week, thanks to an OPRA request filed by Village Green reporters, the Maplewood Police Department has finally released the audio tapes of officers' encounters with those teens.

WESTFIELD BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT HOLDS FINAL HEARING FOR TOWNHOUSE PROJECT
Many Westfield residents aren't happy that one of its oldest homes, which was built in 1755, could be facing demolition by the city in order to make room for age-restricted townhouses. At its most recent meeting, Leah Scalzadonna of TAP into Westfield says the board of adjustment ruled that they could not consider the property’s historic significance because it is not a designated historic site. 

APPELLATE PANEL RULES ON SID LAWSUIT
An appeals court struck down part of a trial judge’s decision rejecting Rahway's attempt to expand a Special Improvement District (SID) in the city, while remanding other parts of the decision for more proceedings. Mark Hrywna of Rahway Rising says Rahway challenged the original judge's ruling that state law does not allow municipalities to create a city-wide SID, among other challenges.
