Cool Temperatures Mean Great Trout Fishing Continues Fingerlings Stocked in Lower Raritan

May 31, 2017 The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is reminding the public that although spring trout stocking has concluded, it's just the beginning of fabulous late spring and early summer trout fishing. Most trout anglers miss out on some of the best trout fishing of the year by not fishing after stocking ends, and the continuing cool and damp weather we've been having is keeping stream and lake temperatures favorable for trout. Many trout waters actually have more fish in them now than when the season started: Every week more trout have been added to stocked waters but fewer are taken out; angler survey data shows that 70% of New Jersey trout anglers release most, if not all, of the trout they catch. Another reason streams are teeming with trout this time of year is the stocking of almost 19,000 additional fish, averaging more then 11 inches in length, during the last three weeks of the season. This is due to the Pequest Trout Hatchery's production of trout in excess of the spring season goal of 570,000, reaching almost 589,000 fish (see the Pequest spring stocking summary for this year's numbers). Those with a fishing license and trout... Read more →

ARCHBISHOP CHAPUT’S COLUMN:HARD CASES MAKE BAD LAW; BAD LAW MAKES HARD CASES

by Archbishop Charles Chaput PHILADELPHIA, PA--“Hard cases make bad law:” It’s a legal principle in U.S. court decisions that dates back at least 170 years. Its origin may go back even further, to Roman jurisprudence. The idea behind it makes sense. Laws should be made for the benefit of the general population. They should reflect and regulate normal circumstances. Good law is not based on exceptions – and especially not exceptions wrapped in emotion. The law should embody sound reasoning rooted in a desire for justice, not warm feelings. The trouble comes when a good principle meets complicated reality. It comes when “exceptions” become more the rule and less and less exceptional, and when enforcing a law does more damage than it fixes. Here’s an example. Jaime L. (name changed) is a student at one of our Philadelphia-area parish schools. He and his younger brother were both born in the United States. Thus both are U.S. citizens. Earlier this month their parents’ car was stopped on the way to dropping Jaime at school. Their mother – an undocumented worker – was arrested on the spot by immigration authorities and transferred to a detention facility in York, PA. The mother has... Read more →

Voros Plumbing and Heating Endorses Sweeney

When my husband John and I opened Voros Plumbing and Heating over 44 years ago, we knew we were taking a risk. Like so many other family-owned small businesses, we were simply trying to make ends meet and build something we could leave for our children. We worked hard, saved enough to retire and kept the business in the family. Thanks to Senator Steve Sweeney’s leadership, we’re confident that our company here in Elmer – and family-owned businesses throughout South Jersey, will continue to thrive. No one has been a more dedicated friend to small businesses and seniors than Steve. He fought for tax incentives enabling small and medium-sized businesses to create good-paying jobs. And he’s been a catalyst for an economic development boom in our region that improved the bottom line of small businesses. Please join us in supporting Steve Sweeney’s reelection to the state Senate. No one works harder for South Jersey than Steve Sweeney. >> Steve’s work on behalf of seniors has touched us all in ways large and small. He led efforts in Trenton to create better, more accessible senior retirement savings plans and to ensure our access to Medicare benefits. He has also fought for... Read more →

A Lesson in Defense: New Jersey National Guard Train in Realistic Combat Scenarios

FORT PICKETT, Va. (May 30, 2017)- There’s an old saying that the best defense is a good offense. However, as the Soldiers of 1st Platoon, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 113th Infantry Regiment, New Jersey National Guard, learned; sometimes defense is your only option. The Soldiers of 1st Platoon were tested on their ability to repel an enemy attack from hasty fighting positions established the night before in the early hours of May 24th, 2017 “It’s easy to attack someone, but when you’re setting up your defense you can get hit in so many ways you’re not expecting. So, this really teaches you a lesson on how to prepare yourself for the next lesson or the next defense,” said Sgt. Daniel Beachum, a team leader with 1st Platoon. “Once the action started to happen I learned a lot.” Real world training is the reason why 1st Platoon and more than 2,500 Soldiers from the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team are here. Litter Bugs Are Ruining Piney Hollow Road Quarry

Winslow Township Police Department in conjunction with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Gaming conducted a weekend long patrol of the State owned quarry along Piney Hollow Road (photo above provided). The patrols were targeting illegal activities on State owned property. Police Lt. D. Fanelle released the following statement;f Prior to the start of the patrols, we announced on our police Facebook page that we would be conducting the proactive patrols of the area. We faced a lot of negative feedback from the illegal ATV riders on our Facebook page. The majority of the comments referenced at we were "taking the fun" away from the illegal ATV riders. Most of the posts on our comments section stated that the "ATV riders should just stay home and do drugs since we were taking their fun away." We can not believe this mentality and thought process. During our patrols we found the amount of visitors to the area was extremely low. We contribute this to the Facebook post announcing that we would be conducting patrols in the area. CNB Crime: FBI Identifies Another Fraud Victim with Information from N-DEx

In March 2016, the FBI’s Buffalo Field Office received a complaint regarding a fraudulent Internet purchase scam. According to information in the complaint, the subject sold concert tickets via the Internet, asked the victims to wire money for the tickets via Western Union, and then failed to provide the tickets. An FBI intelligence analyst (IA) searched intelligence databases and discovered reports naming the subject in similar activities involving MoneyGram and RushCard financial institutions. The IA conducted background research on the subject, including a search of the FBI’s National Data Exchange (N-DEx) System. The N-DEx System search produced a report filed in December 2015 by the Sumner County (Tennessee) Sheriff’s Department (SCSD) that contained an offense code for postal larceny and a reference code for this specific incident. As a result of the findings, an FBI special agent contacted the SCSD, which confirmed that there was an outstanding warrant for the subject for theft under $500 issued by the Hendersonville (Tennessee) Police Department. The SCSD also provided victim information related to the theft that matched a victim named in another report for similar conduct by the subject. The Buffalo Field Office would have had no indication that an arrest warrant had... Read more →

CNB August 2008 Archives: The Chuckle for the Day by Father Dunphy

Every Sunday God would look down from heaven and see some men riding around on this green patch of grass chasing a little white ball. This one Sunday he says to Saint Peter, “Come on Peter let’s see what this is all about”. They pick up a bag a clubs and some golf balls at the club house and proceed out onto the greens. At Hole 7, there is a large pond, 275 yards to the pin. Jesus chooses a 7 Iron and proceeds to tee up when Peter says, “God you are going to need a bigger club than that to reach the green”. Meth Ring Broken Up In Pennsylvania; 10 Suspects Arrested

MIDDLEBURG, Pa (May 25, 2017) — Attorney General Josh Shapiro and Snyder County District Attorney Michael Piecuch today announced the arrests of 10 persons charged with manufacturing and selling methamphetamine as part of a major ring operating in Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties. A statewide investigating grand jury identified Charles “Chip” Hanson, 23, as the main target of a 15-month investigation that was conducted by the Office of Attorney General’s East Drug Task Force, local authorities in Snyder County and other law enforcement agencies. Hanson distributed methamphetamine and taught others how to make it. He is also accused of utilizing meth users to purchase so-called precursors — Sudafed tablets, crystal drain cleaner, lighter fluid and other items — that were used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine. “This investigation involved drug dealers who produced highly-volatile drugs at a motel and in at least one residence where a child was living,” Attorney General Shapiro said at a news conference today. “These dealers put an innocent child and others at risk. Our work with District Attorney Piecuch and other law enforcement agencies led to the dismantling of a major methamphetamine ring. As I’ve said before, we’ll remain merciless with the dealers peddling these... Read more →
