Rider's Lee Lipinski Named to Johnny Bench Award Watch List

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission has added twelve catchers to the official watch list of the 2017 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com and Rider University senior Lee Lipinski (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert Hall) was one of players selected. The total number of student-athletes on the watch list is now 97.

 
 
 
The Johnny Bench Award is given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher and the list will be updated to include other candidates until May 1, 2017. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 17, 2017. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 5, 2017. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 20th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 29, 2017.

This season, Lipinski is leading the Broncs in batting average, hitting .340 in 17 games. Five of his 18 hits this spring have been for extra bases, courtesy of smacking four doubles and a home run. He has also scored 10 runs and registered 10 RBIs. Lipinski is the only Rider player with an on-base percentage over .400. Defensively, He has amassed a .975 fielding percentage to go along with 97 put outs and 20 assists. Behind the dish, he has also gunned down a team-high seven base runners this season.  

Lipinski is one of four catchers in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) on the watch list.

Rider returns to action on Saturday, April 1, with the start of a three-game MAAC series at Iona.
