Gloucester Catholic Ends Florida Trip with Four Wins; Team Improves Overall Record to 8-0

ST.PETERSBURG, FLORIDA (April 21, 2017)(CNBNewsnet)—The undefeated Gloucester Catholic Varsity baseball team, of Gloucester City, NJ ended the four-day Tampa Bay Spring Training event with an 18-6 win over IMG Academy Silver team of Bradenton, Florida at the Walter Fuller Sports Complex. 

Both Gloucester Catholic and IMG Academy had their offenses going on Friday, but Catholic prevailed thanks to 10 runs in the seventh.

Will Shaffer earned the win for the Rams. He tossed three innings, surrendering three runs, four hits, and striking out three. Three relievers helped Catholic to close out the victory. Luke Lesch, threw two innings and Matt Mastrogiovanni, and Chris Garwood each threw one. 

The Rams improved their record to 8-0.  The IMG Academy is a boarding school that specializes in college preparatory and sports training in baseball and seven other sports. (see website)

Earlier in the week GCHS beat Notre Dame Cathedral, of Latin, Ohio (11-0), King High School, of Tampa, Florida (7-1) and Lehigh Senior High School, of St. Petersburg (17-7).  In those four games, the Rams scored a total of  53 runs while holding their opponents to just 14.

Asked about his team’s performance over the past week Coach Adam Tussey said, “We went down to Florida to learn some things about our team. We showed we could win in multiple ways. We had opportunities to work on playing from behind, we had opportunities to work on putting teams away. It was a great experience for our players and staff.”

(UPDATE)The game between Gloucester Catholic and Gloucester High has been changed to Thursday, May 18. Originally that game was scheduled for  Monday, April 24 . 

GCHS will travel on Tuesday to Williamstown and on Wednesday they play Pennsville at home (Joe Barth Field, Brooklawn). All games start at 4 PM.
