Catches Cocaine in Spandex Shorts
NEWARK, N.J. — A passenger arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport had some extra packages in his shorts, fortunately U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers were there to stop him.
On December 14, CBP officers intercepted passenger Mr. Rowald Thomas Tromp, a citizen of the Netherlands, arriving from Oranjestad, Aruba. During his examination, CBP officers found in his backpack a pair of spandex shorts. The shorts contained two packages that when probed produced a white powder that tested positive for cocaine.
In total, CBP discovered approximately 5 lbs. of cocaine with an estimated street value of $78,000.
“This latest seizure demonstrates the steadfastness of the CBP officers on the ground to detect and deter those who would try to import these illegal substances,” said Robert E. Perez, Director, Field Operations New York. “CBP is ever vigilant in our daily battle against the flow of illicit narcotics being smuggled into the United States.”
CBP officers placed Mr. Tromp under arrest and turned him over to the Port Authority Police Department for state prosecution.
All defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty.
