Looking over Barnegat Bay from Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island, New Jersey. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Another Fish Kill Result of Christie Administration Rollbacks Thousands morefish kills were found along the Jersey Shore, this time in Little Egg Harbor. On Saturday, there were between 15,000 and 20,000 small peanut bunker that washed up on several lagoons along Osborn Island in the Great Bay. Like the Keansburg fish kill a week prior, the fish were likely killed due to low dissolved oxygen levels in the Bay, which is the result of poor water quality. These fish kills are a direct result of the Christie Administration’s failure to clean-up our waterways, address over-development and stormwater runoff, while increasing our impact on climate change. At the same time, the Administration has proposed a series of rule proposals that will add more pollution to our waterways throughout the state. “There are more fish kills happening...

MINNEAPOLIS — One of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) 10 most wanted human trafficking fugitives was arrested, by ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents in Chicago, while he was leaving a hospital in Gary, Indiana, on Friday afternoon. Jamal Moore, 33, is currently wanted in Hennepin County (Minneapolis) Minnesota on a state charge of promoting prostitution of a minor. A bench warrant was issued after Moore failed to appear for a pre-trial court date to face the charge in January 2013. The bench warrant was issued via the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. Moore’s arrest Friday resulted from a tip that he had recently checked into a Gary, Indiana hospital under an assumed name. This case was initiated in August of 2012 after information was obtained that a juvenile girl was posted online for the purposes of commercial sex acts. HSI St. Paul and the Minneapolis Police Department, responding...

The federal prison in Talladega, Alabama was the site of a 1991 riot in which detainees held 10 federal employees hostage for more than a week. (Bureau of Prisons photo) Twenty-five years ago this month, the FBI—working closely with our partners at the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP)—played a crucial role in the successful resolution of a prison riot that ended without loss of life or serious injury to any of the hostages, inmates, or responding federal officers. From August 21 through August 30, 1991, at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Talladega, Alabama, approximately 120 Cuban detainees armed with homemade weapons took seven BOP and three Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) employees hostage. The Talladega detainees—a small portion of the more than 120,000 Cubans who came to the U.S. during a six-month period in 1980 in what was called the Mariel boatlift—were being held on a variety of criminal...

The DEP made a contract with NJ Audubon that prohibits the release of any documents associated with the Sparta Mountain Forest Stewardship plan. This contract shows the DEP is working with NJ Audubon to deliberately keep the public out of their proposal to log Sparta Mountain. In the contract, DEP is allowing NJ Audubon to use its Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification to create a Forest Stewardship plan on behalf of the DEP and provide technical assistance for them during implementation. At the same time, FSC has just issued NJ Audubon violations for their plan to log Sparta Mountain. This plan is not a surprise because it will clear-cut the forest and destroy critical natural resources, violate the objectives and goals of the Highlands Act, and go against the Regional Master Plan (RMP). By trying to keep the public out of receiving information, this contract violates the Public Trust Doctrine...

Nick Wright, President South Jersey United Football League One visit to the Gloucester Township Lions facility at Lakeland Memorial Park and I am fully convinced that the South Jersey United Football League (SJUFL) is lucky to have gained such an incredible program. The Lions bring a competitive and family-based program to the SJUFL, and understanding the dynamic of youth football in Gloucester Township only makes us more appreciative of their decision to join our League. You see, Gloucester Township has two youth football programs, which means that the Lions, much like the Rancocas Valley Chiefs, are in direct competition with another organization within their high school sending district boundaries. There is a constant struggle within Gloucester Township for athletes and resources, and so the Lions have taken an admirable approach to competing with their Township counterpart--creating a family based atmosphere that is supportive and character-driven. BY The Cardinal Newman Society Staff The Meeting Point: Course of Affective Sexual Education for Young People (http://www.educazioneaffettiva.org/) is a high school-level sex education program developed by “a group of married couples in Spain,” supported by the Spanish Bishops’ Conference and released online by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family in July 2016. It is intended for use in Catholic high schools, parishes and homes. Although The Cardinal Newman Society does not formally review educational materials, we have taken a close look at this program because of its high profile, parent concerns about its suitability for Catholic families, and our mission to promote and protect faithful Catholic education. We find that The Meeting Point makes frequent use of sexually explicit and morally objectionable images, fails to clearly identify and explain Catholic doctrine from elemental sources including the Ten Commandments and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and compromises the...

By: Dannette Seward When Sergio Garcia-Rico of Chula Vista, Calif., made his frequent trips across the border from California to Mexico, the 53-year-old quadriplegic man was carrying much more than a spare wheelchair in the back of his specially-equipped van. But it wasn't until Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) contacted the ATF San Diego Field Office about an investigation HSI had undertaken into Garcia-Rico's cross-border activities that a special agent with the ATF got involved. "Once HSI briefed us on their investigation, it was apparent Garcia-Rico had straw purchased several firearms from gun stores in southern California," the agent said. Court records show looking into those purchases bore investigative fruit. Garcia-Rico later admitted he had purchased firearms at gun shops and gun shows in several California cities, and had lied on forms, stating the firearms were for his personal use. Purchasing weapons for others is also known as "straw purchasing." ATF...

But who are these people? How and where do they hunt deer? Do they support or oppose the agency’s deer management program? The results of a recent Pennsylvania Game Commission survey of 5,892 randomly selected deer hunters now sheds light on their preferences. “Hunters returned 3,572 surveys, which resulted in a response rate of 61 percent,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “We were pleased with hunter participation in the survey, because it improves substantially the accuracy of responses hunters provided in this important periodic survey.” The 2011 survey...

August 26, 2016 Weekly Wastebasket Volume: XXI No. 34 “In fiscal year 2016, the federal budget deficit will increase in relation to economic output for the first time since 2009, the Congressional Budget Office estimates. If current laws generally remained unchanged … deficits would continue to mount over the next 10 years, and debt held by the public would rise from its already high level.” So starts the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) annual update to its budget and economic outlook. While the language is kind of boring and gray, the underlying data can put your hair on fire. At $590 billion, the FY16 deficit will be one-third ($152 billion) larger than last year’s. Truth be told, a portion ($41 billion) is because some payments due fiscal year 2017 will be made this year because the start of the fiscal year falls on a weekend. But even taking that into account,...

Image: (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Newswise — CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (AUGUST 23, 2016). Seventy percent of football players in the US are youths 9 to 14 years of age, yet most data on head impacts sustained in this sport have been from high school, college, and professional football players. This makes it difficult to make informed decisions on how best to structure practices and games to protect younger players from concussion. A new study reported in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics will hopefully change that. It focuses on these younger players and the head impacts they sustain throughout the football season and offers suggestions to reduce the risk of high-magnitude head impacts. Researchers from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech (Eamon T. Campolettano, BS, Steven Rowson, PhD, and Stefan M. Duma, PhD) used biomechanical sensors to investigate exposure to head impacts in 9- to 11-year-olds engaged in a...

Newswise — The majority of smokers who successfully switch to vaping say they have fewer respiratory infections, according to a study led by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The on-line survey of 941 respondents assessed subjective changes in respiratory symptoms in smokers who switched to vaping for at least two months. The results, published in the Journal of Addiction Research & Therapy, show that 66 per cent of respondents reported an improvement in respiratory symptoms, 29 per cent reported no change and 5 per cent reported worsening. Senior author Professor Peter Hajek from QMUL said: "There is no doubt that e-cigarettes are much safer than conventional cigarettes, but smokers are still led to believe that they're dangerous. This misinformation includes a misreported study on rats that claimed that vaping may increase vulnerability to infections. These new findings from human vapers show that this is not the case. "The study...
