College Baseball Rider Signs Lehigh Valley Star

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ--John Yocum of Allentown, PA, a recent graduate of Freedom High School, will be a member of the Rider University baseball team in the fall.

The Eastern PA Conference MVP, Yocum was a First Team All-Conference selection as a pitcher and also a First Team All-Conference selection as a third baseman.

“We are very fortunate to land JJ,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.  “He was one of Lehigh Valley’s top performers. He will compete for a significant role in either our rotation or in the back end of our bullpen.”

As a senior Yocum was 7-2 on the mound with a 0.59 earned run average. In 59 innings he allowed just 41 hits and compiled 61 strikeouts and just 19 walks.  As an infielder he batted .338 with five doubles, a pair of triples and four home runs.

“From what I have seen he has a ‘bulldog’ mentality, competing on every pitch,” said Davis, the 2015 MAAC Coach of the Year. “It is something we lacked as a team last year and he, along with our other signees, will bring this quality to us at a much needed time.”

Yocum joins junior college transfer Harrison McClure of Georgia, Pete Soporowski of South Amboy, NJ, Joe Simone of Wayne, NJ, Kyle Johnson of Jackson, NJ and Tyler Stockwell of LaPlata, Maryland as newcomers to the 2017 roster.
