Camden, NJ … Seniors Eric Teesdale (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) and Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) carried The College of New Jersey baseball team to its 12th consecutive victory as they shut out Rutgers University-Camden, 4-0 on Friday afternoon.
The win improved the Lions record to 26-4 as they maintained a firm hold on first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings. TCNJ is now 10-2 in conference play, while the Scarlet Raptors (18-11) dropped to 5-7 in the NJAC.
Teesdale put forth his best performance as a starter. He went eight innings and gave up just four hits and struck out four. Teesdale issued five bases on balls, but rose to the challenge each time RUC had runners in scoring position.
The Lions took an early lead when sophomore Patrick Anderson (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) found the gap in right-center field for a double. Roberts followed with a single to left-center to put the Lions ahead, 1-0.
The Scarlet Raptors loaded the bases in the fourth with a single and a pair of walks. But Teesdale got Jon Theckston to fly out to left and end the threat.
TCNJ capitalized on an RUC miscue to tack on two more runs in the seventh. Sophomore Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) singled and junior Ben Varone (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) drew a free pass. With two outs, Anderson sent a ball to right field that was misplayed, allowing Follet and Varone to score.
In the eighth, Roberts went deep for his fifth home run of the season and tenth of his career. The solo shot to right gave him his team-high 38th run batted this spring.
The Scarlet Raptors continued to battle to get to break their scoreless droughgt. Joe Brooks and Chris Jones both singled with one out. Teesedale buckled down once again, to get a line out to shortstop and ground ball to Anderson, who stepped on third base to end the inning.
Sophomore closer Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) entered the game in the ninth. He struck out the first batter he faced and recorded a ground out to third. Rutgers-Camden put two runners on with a pair of singles. But a shortstop Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) field a ground ball and flipped to second to secure the shutout and road win.
Roberts went 3-for-4 and is now hitting .408 on the season. Varone and senior Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) each had two hits. Teesdale is now 3-1 on the season.
TCNJ returns home tomorrow (Saturday) to host Ramapo College for an NJAC doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. Prior to the opening game, the Lions’ baseball program will host their annual Military Day event to recognize those who have served to protect and defend our freedoms as a country.
