BUIES CREEK, NC— Mayberry, RFD (Really Fine Day).
Rider junior Dalton Mayberry (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnett Valley) collected four hits and two RBI to lead Rider to victory at Campbell Tuesday night. “He had a very productive day,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “He seemed to be on base quite a bit.”
It was Rider’s first victory since winning the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship and graduating a dozen key players. “I’m relieved,” Davis said. “It is hard to get the first one. We played better tonight.”
Mayberry hit a two-run single to tie the score at 2-2 in the third inning. “He gave us a big lift with the hit to tie the game,” Davis said.
Rider freshman Brett Kosciolek (Nesquehoning, PA/Tamaqua) pitched six innings, allowing just three runs while striking out seven for his first collegiate victory. “Brett did a great job,” Davis said. “He threw strikes for the most part. He did the job for us and kept them at bay.”
Sophomore Jake Bender (Ellicot, Md./Marriotts Ridge) singled and scored on a wild pitch to give Rider a 9-3 lead in the seventh inning. Bender had two of Rider’s 15 hits.
Sophomore Teagan Piechnick (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) hit Rider’s first home run of the season, a two-run shot that gave the Broncs an 11-3 lead. “He’s a guy that has been trying to get on the field and that’s one way to do it,” Davis said. “He hit it good. He’s always had power. Those RBIs were big.”
Freshman Riley Mihalik (Churchville, PA/Chestnut Hill) collected two hits, including a two-run single in the fifth inning, to give Rider a 7-2 lead. “He had two hits and made a nice play in the field,” Davis said of his rookie first baseman. “He made a couple of nice plays in the field. He’s one of the young guys that needs to be out there. Today was a plus for him.”
Rider scored five runs in the fifth inning on two walks, two errors and three hits.
Junior Tyler Kaiser (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) doubled for the fourth time this season.
Freshman Brennan McAllister (Middletown, DE/Middletown) hit a pinch-hit RBI single with two outs in the sixth inning to give Rider an 8-2 lead. “He’s a tough out,” Davis said.
Campbell (7-10) scored two runs in the ninth inning for the final score. “We made two errors in the eighth and ninth innings, but we got the win,” Davis said.
Campbell took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a hit batsman, walk, single and a fielder’s choice. “We were thinking ‘here we go’ but Brett settled down,” Davis said.
Rider (1-11) lost twice to Campbell last season, 11-4 in the season opener and 2-1. The Broncs are now 1-6 vs. Campbell since the series began in 2012.
Rider will play Campbell in the second game of the two-game series Wednesday at 6pm. “We got the pressure off with the first win, but we still need to play better,” Davis said. “Hopefully we’ll do that tomorrow night.”
