NJDEP Division of Fish & Wildlife - Sparta Mountain WMA Forest Stewardship Plan

30-day Public Comment Period Extended to March 1, 2016

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has partnered with the NJ Audubon Society to revise the existing Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP) for the 3,461-acre Sparta Mountain Wildlife Management Area in Sussex County. The primary goal of the plan is to maintain ecosystem health, diversity, and integrity by creating a greater balance among the stages of forest succession throughout the property, minimizing further distribution of invasive exotic species, and enhancing biological diversity through responsible silviculture and mimicking natural "gap disturbances".

As part of the process of developing this plan, stakeholders who have insights about this area and interest in the management of state land were involved during the plan's revision, and a separate 30-day comment period for the final draft was held specifically for the stakeholders (ended December 18, 2015).
