CNB CRIME: Charles F. Sawyer of Glassboro Guilty in Ex-Wife's Murder

WOODBURY NJ (February 26, 2016)--Charles F. Sawyer (DOB 12/9/53), of Glassboro NJ was convicted today (2/26) of fatally shooting his former wife in the living room of her Glassboro home on 7/2/12, a crime prosecution witnesses testified was accomplished by holding a handgun against her head and firing.
Sawyer, who had been divorced from 53-year-old Rita Sawyer since 2004, was found guilty of first-degree murder, felony murder, kidnapping, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, burglary, theft, aggravated assault and threat to kill following an eight-day jury trial
The jury returned its verdict after less than three hours of deliberation.
Sawyer has been in jail in default of $750,000 bail since his arrest in Salem County several; hours after the shooting. After the verdict, Superior Court Judge Kevin T. Smith revoked his bail and scheduled sentencing for 4/22/16.
The case was presented by Gloucester County Assistant Prosecutor Staci Scheetz. The investigation conducted by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, New Jersey State Police and the Glassboro Police Department.
