In addition to concerns for their own children, parents and guardians refused PARCC because of its impact on public schools, including: narrowing the curriculum consuming instructional time failing to improve educational outcomes increasing costs to districts for infrastructure to administer the tests encouraging teaching to the tests Parents and guardians also objected to PARCC's lack of quality or validity, to the forced imposition of ever-greater amounts of high-stakes standardized testing, and to the increased use of such tests to... FBI: Putting the Brakes on Crime

Getaway Driver Sentenced to 121 Years 02/26/16 Sesley Williams was a ringleader and getaway driver for a string of robberies involving multiple banks and commercial establishments in Las Vegas and nearby Henderson, Nevada. Today she’s in a federal prison after being sentenced last month by a U.S. district judge. It all started on a winter afternoon in 2012. While Williams sat in her car outside an outlet mall clothing store in Las Vegas, her accomplice, Anthony Jordan, was inside checking out merchandise. Jordan already had a sweater and a bottle of cologne in his possession when he asked an employee to bring out two watches from a locked glass container. With the items in hand, Jordan made his way to the registers to check out. As the cashier began ringing him up, Jordan brandished a semi-automatic handgun and demanded everything from the drawer. In all, Jordan walked out of the... Read more →

This State Offered Free College Education. Here’s What Happened | THE DAILY SIGNAL

Norbert Michel / @norbertjmichel Several politicians have recently been offering free goodies to voters. One of the most popular of these, oddly enough, is something that several state governments have already tackled: free college tuition. The details vary by state, but Oregon, Tennessee, Georgia, Michigan, and Louisiana (among others) all use tax dollars to pay for at least some of their residents’ college tuition. Louisiana provides a great case study for advocates of similar federal policies. Louisiana provides a great case study for advocates of similar federal policies. Louisiana just so happens to be in the news right now because the governor is threatening to suspend his state’s version of free college tuition for everyone. This extremely popular program uses tax dollars to pay full tuition (and some fees) at any of Louisiana’s... Read more →

Prolific Washington State Bank Robber Sent to Prison

Caught in the Act 02/23/16 The masked criminal known as the Cyborg Bandit and, later, the Elephant Man Bandit was robbing Seattle-area banks at an average of more than two per month for an entire year before he was caught—in the act of robbing a bank he had already robbed. For investigators who routinely work bank robberies, the story of 46-year-old Anthony Hathaway, sentenced last month to nearly nine years in prison, is surprising in some ways but all too familiar in others. “In this particular case and in general, bank robbery is a crime of last resort,” said Len Carver, a detective with the Seattle Police Department and member of the FBI’s Seattle Safe Streets Task Force. “Occasionally you get a thrill seeker or a truly violent individual, but most people who rob banks are supporting an addiction of some kind—drugs or gambling—and they are desperate.” Hathaway’s addiction was... Guest Opinion: Growing the Deficit | Taxpayers for Commons Sense

February 26, 2016 Weekly Wastebasket Volume: XXI No. 8 As the House Budget Committee is busy cultivating the Budget Resolution to guide the fiscal year 2017 appropriations process, other committees are broadcasting their wants and (claimed) needs in annual “views and estimates” letters. The House Agriculture Committee’s letter shows their continued insistence on planting misinformation about the last farm bill so that agriculture special interests won’t be interrupted in their decades-long quest to harvest taxpayer dollars. First a quick reminder on the farm bill. Passed every five or six years, the farm bill is the primary legislation Washington uses to direct subsidies to farmers, ranchers, and to the nation’s nutrition programs. The last one passed in 2014 clocked in at a projected $956 billion over 10 years. While about 80 percent of that was designated for nutrition, the next biggest sums went to federally-subsidized insurance for farmers’ income, additional income... Read more →

Four hours later, their efforts had yielded only a couple of smaller fish, and they were preparing to pack up and go elsewhere when Klein made one last, fateful cast into what he would later recall as the pond’s surprisingly clear water for the time of year. Court: In Philly cases, no First Amendment right to film police | Ron DeLord

PHILADELPHIA PA--You have no First Amendment right to videotape or take pictures of police officers without a specific, critical reason for doing so, according to a ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The court ruled Friday in Fields vs. City of Philadelphia that absent “any state purpose of being critical of the government,” your freedom of expression and speech is not applicable when recording the activities of police officers. The decision comes off of a joint lawsuit filed by Amanda Geraci and Richard Fields. In 2013, Fields, an undergraduate at Temple University, was recording about 20 police officers outside a house party on campus. Gloucester City's Jogging Track Perfect Place to Build Outdoor Fitness Center for Adults

image credit www.gfoutdoorfitness.com As I see Gloucester City care more and more about children's physical fitness and recreation sports, I wonder if we could do more for adults. A theme that has been popping up around the country is outdoor fitness and gym equipment at public parks. The equipment is surprisingly affordable and easy to maintain. Putting this Outdoor fitness center in the middle of the jogging track on Johnson Blvd, would allow parents to get a workout in while there children play at the nearby playground, or participate in any of the city sports right down the street. This affordable equipment can help city residents enjoy the outdoors while taking care of they're fitness. Equipment manufacturers have bundle packages, and could even be set up as different stations around the track. http://www.gametime.com/products/fitness-equipment-packages-products/ http://www.norwelloutdoorfitness.com/en/packages-1 http://www.gfoutdoorfitness.com/fitness-packages.html Don Fager Correctional Officer FDC Philadelphia Department of Justice Read more →

Guest Commentary: Misgivings About the Girl Scouts | Catholic League

February 26, 2016 Bill Donohue defends St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson's position on the Girl Scouts: If an organization that did noble work were to waver, aligning itself with groups that are hostile to the values that made it admirable, it would ineluctably alienate many of its initial supporters. This is exactly what has happened to the Girl Scouts. Which is why the bishops' conference investigated the Scouts, concluding in 2014 that some of the concerns were genuine; each bishop was asked to evaluate local conditions. St. Louis Archbishop Carlson has expressed his misgivings about the Girl Scouts and has asked each pastor to reconsider the parish's relationship with the organization. Importantly, he is not abandoning Catholic youth: He has instituted a Catholic Committee for Girls Formation. "While continuing to serve our Catholic girls involved in various scouting programs," he said, "this committee will also reflect our ongoing commitment to... Read more →
