Thursday, January 28, 2016
Gloucester Township January 25, 2016--On January 25, 2016, at approximately 6:11 pm, the Gloucester Township Police Department was called to a residence on Betsy Drive for report of a suicidal man. The man was reported to be armed with a large knife, and that he ingested a large quantity of medications. As police officers arrived on location they found the 37 year old man sitting in his rear yard holding a large kitchen knife. Officers immediately began talking with the man from a safe distance, in an effort to intervene with his crisis. As a result of the Officers deescalation techniques, he man eventually dropped the knife into the snow near where he was sitting.
As officers began to approach the man, he suddenly stood up, made a suicidal statement, and he quickly attempted to retrieve the knife from the ground. One of the officers deployed a Conductive Energy Device (CED or Taser) on the man. The CED was effective, and temporarily incapacitated the man. Officers then moved in and safely secured the man. The man was then walked to an awaiting ambulance where he was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
The man was not injured. No police officers were injured as well. There are no criminal charges at this time.
