Pine Hill Police News: Ford Driving Skills for Life program a success at Overbrook High School

On Tuesday, October 20, 2015 students from Overbrook High School participated in the Ford Driving Skills for Life program in the main parking lot of the school.  Students were able to go hands-on operating real motor vehicles from the Ford Motor Company in scenarios to help them make better decisions as teen drivers.

The Pine Hill Police Department has made it a priority to help teach teen drivers safe habits and explain the consequences of reckless driving.  During the school year, officers participate in classrooms during driver’s education lessons and also attend the annual prom safety assembly put on by Cooper Trauma Center.  SRO Rowello meets with each student driver prior to the student being permitted to get a parking pass for the high school’s parking lot.  During the meeting, safe driving habits are reinforced along with a safety check of their vehicle in the parking lot.

One scenario during the event used a vehicle with several passengers distracting the student driver while they attempted to maneuver through a coned obstacle course within the parking lot.  Two students were overheard talking to each other saying, “I will never text and drive after this.”  Ptl. Raynore also helped out by jumping in the backseat creating a distraction.

During the intoxicated driving scenarios, Ptl. Field, Ptl. Kramer & Ptl. Davies assisted with administering the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests to students while they wore Fatal Vision Goggles.  The goggles help students become visually impaired in likeness to those impaired due to blood alcohol levels and drug induced intoxication.

All in all, the students had a great day learning with the company’s extremely energetic and helpful staff.  Special thanks to the Pine Hill School District for hosting the event and Mr. James McCulley of Pine Hill Beat the Heat Racing for bringing Ford Driving Skills for Life to Pine Hill!
