YOUR MONEY:Federal Protective Service Mismanaged Vehicle Fleet

PRESS RELEASE October 2015 A new Office of Inspector General (OIG), Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report determined that Federal Protective Service (FPS) mismanaged its vehicle fleet and potentially missed opportunities to save more than $2.5 million in Fiscal Year 2014. The report, “The FPS Vehicle Fleet Is Not Managed Effectively,” cites a number of unjustified FPS management decisions, including:  Leasing 101 more vehicles than the total number of FPS officers  Leasing 32 administrative vehicles  Leasing SUVs instead of standard sedans  Adding costly discretionary equipment to vehicles. The OIG audit, requested by Congress, also found that FPS overpaid for law enforcement vehicle equipment packages, lacked a comprehensive vehicle allocation methodology, and did not have accurate fleet data to make management decisions. ONLY IN NEW JERSEY: Mayor Mayer has Plaque dedicated… in his honor?

Plaques are a funny thing. For a small donation, you can have a plaque dedicated to anyone on pretty much any park bench in Gloucester Township. However, is it appropriate to have a plaque (created with public money) dedicated to a sitting Mayor… created by that same Mayor? Is it just me, or is there something very Nazi Germany, Soviet Russian and Maoist China about all of that? Mayor Mayer is the Mayor of Gloucester Township, and has had some form of political role in South Jersey ever since about 2002. This past week, I have received a barrage of criticism from friends and acquaintances on social media about Mayor Mayer’s seemingly tasteless move of allowing a plaque/statue to be raised in his honor at Gloucester Township Park: “It seems that a small statue has been placed on a newly constructed wall at GT Community Park. The plaque reads Dedicated... Read more →

Division of Consumer Affairs Warns Consumers of Recent Rash of Utility Phone Scams

CONSUMER ALERT: NEWARK – The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs today warned consumers about a scam in which individuals posing as utility company employees are calling customers and threatening to turn off their electric and gas service if a payment is not made immediately over the phone. Customers are then given a telephone number to call to make an immediate payment. Some customers are directed to pay with a pre-paid debit card, which is then drained of funds by the scammer. Other customers are asked to give their bank information to “take care of” the past due account and keep the power on. Customers of Public Service Electric & Gas Company (“PSE&G”) and Jersey Central Power & Light (“JCP&L”) have reported receiving such calls in recent weeks. “Fraudsters are posing as representatives of actual utilities that are providing services to customers,” said Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman. “We... Read more →

Christie seeks comeback as campaign hits bottom - Watchdog.org

By Mark Lagerkvist / October 26, 2015 | NJ Watchdog It’s time for a reality check as Chris Christie prepares for the third GOP presidential debate on Wednesday. The New Jersey governor’s dream of winning the White House looks more like a delusion. He is low on campaign cash, far behind in the polls and struggling for a way to flip his fortunes. Once upon a time – two years ago next month, to be precise – Christie was riding on top of the Republican world. He was re-elected governor with 60 percent of the vote in a heavily Democratic state. In a CNN poll, he was the leading choice for president with 24 percent of GOP voters, nine points ahead of his nearest rival. Now, Christie is scraping the bottom. He has dropped to 9th place in the polls with an average of 2.4 percent – one-tenth of the... Read more →

What does a priest do on Monday through Friday?

Posted on October 22, 2015 Posted By: Maria What does a priest do on Monday through Friday? Do they sleep in the church? Are they ever allowed to be out of uniform? Back in June, I began my pastoral year at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Gibbsboro. A pastoral year has been described as a “year of internship.” While I’ve had many of these questions answered for me already, seeing the day to day life of a priest first hand has helped me to have a more in-depth answer to some of these questions. When I started my pastoral year, I was told that not much happens at parishes during July and August. However, as soon as September started, things started to kick into gear. It seems that the parish office is never empty and that there are always cars in the parking lot. Seminarian Joshua Nevitt For me,... Read more →

Seniors Who Don’t Consider Switching Drug Plans May Face Steep Price Rise By Michelle Andrews

When Mildred Fine received the annual notice informing her about changes to her Medicare prescription drug plan for 2016, she was shocked. If she stayed with the same plan, her monthly premium would more than triple, from $33.90 to $121.10, and her annual deductible would rise from $320 to $360. The increase didn’t make sense to Fine, 84, whose prescriptions haven’t changed and whose drugs are generally inexpensive. She takes two generic blood pressure drugs and a generic antidepressant, as well as Estrace, an estrogen cream. This year, she didn’t meet her deductible until September. Working with a counselor from her local State Health Insurance Assistance Program, Fine logged on to Medicare’s plan finder to compare the roughly 20 plans available near her home in Burns, Ore. She found a plan with no deductible and a monthly premium of $33.50, less than what she pays now. Fine estimates she’ll save... Read more →
