College Baseball Cranberry in Four

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Cranberry defeated Black three games to one in the 2015 Cranberry-Black Series, held October 17 on the Sonny Pittaro Field.

The annual best-of-five series of three inning games brings an official close to the fall baseball season at Rider.

In Game 1 Cranberry won 2-1, with sophomore pitcher Nick Margevicius (North Royalton, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) getting the win.  Margevicius struck out five Black batters in three innings. Junior Dalton Mayberry (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnet Valley), a transfer from Marist College, had a one-out RBI single in the ninth inning for the game-winner.

Black tied the series at 1-1 in Game 2 with a 4-3 victory.  Freshman Tyler Sanfilippo (Wayne, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) hit a two- run double and freshman Jack Finn (Ellicott City, MD/Calvert Hall) had two hits and an RBI for the winners.  Sophomore pitcher Paul Sparano (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) got the win, striking out three in three innings.   For Cranberry, junior Tyler Kaiser (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) hit a two-run home run and had all three Cranberry RBI.

Cranberry won Game 3 by the score of 5-0 and erupted for a 9-1 win in the deciding Game 4. In the final game sophomore Teagan Piechnick (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) hit a two-run home run and junior catcher Lee Lipinski (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert Hall) had two hits. Junior Mike Volaski (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) added a triple for Cranberry.

In the four games, freshman Richie Tecco (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) compiled three hits and three RBI for Cranberry. Finn had three hits for Black.

Team Cranberry, named after Rider’s founder, Andrew J. Rider, the Cranberry King of North America, leads the all-time series eight to four.
