GHS Teacher’s Aide/Coach Arrested for Sexual Assault of 13-Year-Old; Date of Incident 9/1/2002

GLOUCESTER CITY NJ—Robert A. Savage, of Stratford, a teacher's aide employed by the Gloucester City Public School District was arrested by the Gloucester City Police on July 29 for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old student.  Savage was also the high school girls track coach at the time of the incident

The crime allegedly occurred on or about September 1, 2002, in Gloucester City. 

From the warrant: 

 The defendant on or about September 1, 2002, did commit an act of sexual penetration upon the victim. The victim being at least 13 but less than 16 years old and the defendant has supervisory or disciplinary power over the victim by virtue of the defendant’s legal, profession or occupational status  specifically  by having vaginal intercourse with the victim while employed as the victim’s teacher’s aide and coach, a crime of the First Degree (NJSA 2C:14-2A (2) (B). 

 Savage was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, sexual conduct, a crime of the Second Degree (NJSA 2C:24-4A).

Bail was set at $300,000. 

 Asked if the investigation is ongoing, Gloucester City Police Sgt. Stephen Burkhardt said, "The investigation is continuing due to the fact that the victim reported several assaults by the same suspect in other locations outside of Gloucester City.  Additional counts of these charges may be brought in those jurisdictions.  At this time, no additional victims have come forward and the investigation, to this point, has not indicated that there are additional victims.”

The Gloucester City School District released the following statement regarding the suspect’s arrest. 

On Wednesday, July 29, the Gloucester City Police Department informed the Gloucester City School District that a paraprofessional and athletic coach employed by the distrIct, Mr. Robert Savage, had been arrested by the Camden County Prosecutors Office for incidents that allegedly began in 2002.

The school district will be fully cooperating with the investigation by legal authorities. The Gloucester City School District did terminate Mr. Robert Savage’s employment at the regular meeting of the Board of Education on August 11, 2015. 

 The school district will be providing counseling for any student in need of assistance. The district urged anyone with further information about the alleged crime to contact authorities.
