(CNBNewsnet)Based on my many years of experimentation, and poundage, here's my all-star list of bakeries and some wonderful items for you to try:
Audubon: Desserts by Design - Merchant Street
A wonderful selection of cakes, cookies and other baked goods. Wonderful tarts, especially the coconut, carrot cake, and almond paste pastry. Renee will great you with her lovely smile.
Haddon Heights: 'Tis So Sweet - 9th Avenue, just off Kings Highway
I love their small, plain cherry pie. One of the best I've ever had, and I've had plenty. Sonya is a charming lady who also appears with her taste treats at the Haddon Heights Farm Market on Sunday mornings. She also has a "bakery camp" for children in the summer.
Haddon Township: McMillan's, Haddon Avenue
They need no introduction. Many items to choose from. Their cream donuts are loaded. I love the dark chocolate crullers. So light. I've had three in a row! If you order pies or other items for the holidays, make sure you come early. I thought I came early one time. I was about Number 47. Early at McMillan's means when the door opens!
Haddonfield: Posh Pop, Kings Highway
This is a gluten free bakery. This may attract you, but don't let it stop you. It's a lovely, small shop that features a variety of items. My favorite are the "macarons" (aka macaroons) that they offer in a variety of favors. As good as any I've had in France. I love the Nutella ones. As Soupy Sales used to say: "They'll make your brains fall out!" They show a coconut one of their website that looks just luscious. Next time!
Vincentown: Green Top Market, Route 70, Vincentown, just before The Red Lion Circle on the left going toward LBI
In addition to all the good produce they have, their pies are truly extraordinary. I got a "Mixed Berry Pie' there. It was one of the best things I ever ate. I actually called them up to tell the nice lady who baked it that it was the best pie I ever had. This woman is a national treasure. I'd recommend calling ahead to see what they have, then reserve what you want because they sometimes sell out. I learned that the hard way the last time. Oh the pain...
