After six seasons as the boys’ basketball coach at Schalick High School, Cassidy has been named the coach at Cherokee.
He was approved by the Lenape Regional High School District’s board of education Wednesday.
Cassidy technically replaces Paul Wiedeman, who took the position on May 13 but resigned less than a week later to remain at Haddonfield. Matt Shultz led the Chiefs to a second straight South Jersey Group 4 final last season before stepping down after five seasons.
“I’m really excited,” Cassidy said. “It’s an opportunity for me to step into a great program with great kids. Lucky for me, the position re-opened and I’m thrilled.
“Schalick gave me my first chance as a young kid at 23. That’s something not too many schools do and I’m grateful for that. I loved the kids at Schalick and the toughest thing for me was telling them I was leaving.”
