April 16, 2015 Bill Donohue comments on several campaigns against Catholic schools: We never hear of attempts by outsiders to dictate to Jews how to run their yeshivas. The same is true of the increasing number of Islamic schools: no one tells Muslims what their employment policies should be. The same is not true of Catholic schools. In San Francisco, outsiders have spent an enormous amount of money seeking to pressure the Archdiocese to change its prospective handbook for faculty. Outsiders, driven by the media, put Iowa Governor Terry Branstad on the firing line: they forced him to comment on Dowling Catholic High School's decision not to hire an openly gay teacher; the Catholic executive exercised good sense and is not getting involved in the internal matters of this school. A Sommerville, New Jersey Catholic teacher was reinstated after outsiders pressured the school to sanction her for making allegedly anti-gay...

By Mark Lagerkvist | New Jersey Watchdog New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie defended his failure to report any of his $95,000 annual entertainment allowance on tax returns, arguing the money isn’t income because he has accounted for it. Just don’t ask him to make those records available to the public. Through his press secretary, Christie rejected New Jersey Watchdog’s request to disclose how he spent the cash. Government-transparency advocates and tax specialists fired back. “If it’s not public, then you’re not being accountable because it’s the public who decides whether or not you have a job,” said Bill Allison, senior fellow at Sunlight Foundation, a non-profit advocate for transparency in government. “I don’t know how they can be saying these are not public records and can’t be disclosed.” While refusing to reveal how Christie spent his allowance, his press office cited budget documents showing he doesn’t always spend all of...

English: Photo of skin test about 15 minutes after the application of allergens and the scratching. By Andrew Collins Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 The Washington Post recently ran a series of articles purporting to explain how welfare benefits are spent in America. They open with ledes like “Poverty looks pretty great if you’re not living in it,” and “There’s nothing fun about being on welfare, and a new Kansas bill aims to keep it that way.” The idea behind such pieces is to provide a counter-narrative to the “suspicion” that the poor use food stamps and other government benefits to buy luxury goods like lobster and filet mignon. Absent from the Post’s coverage is clear, convincing data about how much abuse takes place when it comes to welfare spending. They skirt the obvious question: Can anything be done to ensure that taxpayer funds are spent more responsibly? For Watchdog.org, the answer is an unequivocal yes. The Post’s stories were prompted by welfare reform bills in statehouses,...

April 15, 2015 Bill Donohue comments on remarks made yesterday by Pope Francis and Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Killing a 7-pound baby is not only okay, it is an expression of "personal liberty." That is what the head of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, told Wolf Blitzer. The CNN host asked if "it's okay, from your perspective, to kill a 7-pound baby in uterus?" The question arose because Republican Senator Rand Paul is asking the media to press Schultz on this issue. She responded to Blitzer saying, "We have very different definitions of personal liberty." Later in the day, Fox News host Megyn Kelly asked Schultz to define when life begins. She dodged the question several times. Pope Francis knows when life begins, and he most definitely does not believe it is morally licit to kill a 7-pound baby, inside or outside the mother's womb. All life begins at...

By Rachel Martin | Watchdog.org PITTSBURGH — A federal court recently told a Lawrence County woman she’s simply out of luck and can’t sue local officials, including a Common Pleas judge who apparently made up a criminal charge that was used to place her on electronic monitoring. Shutterstock image DENIED: The Third Circuit said that a Lawrence County woman can’t sue the judge who used a seemingly-made-up charge in her case. A judge has absolute civil immunity, even if the action “was in error, was done maliciously, or was in excess of his authority,” the three-judge panel ruled in its six-page opinion. Judge Thomas Piccione hadordered Lynn Van Tassel to report to jail after she didn’t pay her ex-husband’s attorney’s fees as ordered — even though she was appealing that order. He sentenced her to 90 days in jail and had her arrested on a bench warrant. He then put...

Tags on DNA from fathers’ sperm linked to children’s autism symptoms Newswise — In a small study, Johns Hopkins researchers found that DNA from the sperm of men whose children had early signs of autism shows distinct patterns of regulatory tags that could contribute to the condition. A detailed report of their findings will be published online in the International Journal of Epidemiology on April 15. Autism spectrum disorder (autism) affects one in 68 children in the U.S. Although studies have identified some culprit genes, most cases remain unexplained. But most experts agree that autism is usually inherited, since the condition tends to run in families. In this study, investigators looked for possible causes for the condition not in genes themselves, but in the “epigenetic tags” that help regulate genes’ activity. “We wondered if we could learn what happens before someone gets autism,” says Andrew Feinberg, M.D., M.P.H., the King...

WMU BOUNDARY CHANGES Commissioners give final approval to a proposal that extends WMU 5D north and west. The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners today gave final approval to a proposal that expands Wildlife Management Unit 5D north and west into what now is Wildlife Management Unit 5C. In voting on the measure, the board said the new boundary line better divides the more-developed urban areas surrounding Philadelphia and the less-developed areas farther from the city. The commissioners noted the proposed boundary change is in keeping with the philosophy of the Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) system, which groups land areas that are similar regarding their land use and population, to better manage wildlife at a local level. Revisions have been made to WMU boundaries previously as they have been deemed necessary by the board. With the change, WMU 5D becomes larger. Its new boundary runs west from the New Jersey state...

April 13, 2015 Catholic League: Bill Donohue comments on the remarks made yesterday by Pope Francis: There are two good reasons why Pope Francis chose to address the genocide of the Armenian people. First, Armenia was the world's first Christian country. Second, this year marks the centennial of the 20th century's first genocide. It should also be noted that it was Muslims who were responsible for these atrocities, and they are at it again today. The Turkish government says the pope is guilty of promoting "unfounded claims." It is wrong: nothing the Holy Father said is historically inaccurate, though in fairness, there have been "unfounded claims." It is true that some observers have lumped together those Armenians who died as the result of disease, famine, and war with those who were singled out for extinction. It is also true that there is evidence supporting the claim that some Turkish officials took...

TAXPAYERS FOR COMMON SENSE Volume XX No.15: April 10, 2015 Congress is set to return from its most recent recess and high on the list of special interests is reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank. Rather than exposing taxpayers to billions in potential losses by giving new life to this Depression-era dinosaur, lawmakers should focus on other more pressing issues. It’s time to protect taxpayers by ending Ex-Im. The Export-Import Bank is a government-backed entity that’s long past its useful life. Created in 1934, the bank supposedly supports U.S. jobs by loaning money to foreign buyers of U.S. products and providing loan guarantees and insurance-like products to U.S. exporters. It purportedly fills a void by providing financing for worthy ventures that can’t get private backing. In reality it’s a favor-factory for politically well-connected corporations trolling for corporate welfare. The Export-Import bank is a poster child for special interest favoritism. Nearly two-thirds of...

04/10/15 LAWRENCE MASSACHUSETTS--The Dominican street gang in Lawrence, Massachusetts must have thought they had the perfect illegal enterprise: kidnap drug dealers, bookmakers, and money launderers, steal their cash and drugs, and then hold them for ransom—knowing that since the victims were themselves criminals, they and their families would likely never report the abductions. The gang members—known as joloperros, or stick-up guys—were organized, armed, and violent: They often tortured their victims, sometimes with hot irons. “They targeted anyone they thought they could make large sums of money from,” said Special Agent Jeff Wood, coordinator of the North Shore Gang Task Force, one of the FBI’s three Safe Streets Task Forces in Massachusetts. The kidnappings began around 2010 in and around Lawrence, a largely Hispanic city and gang stronghold located about 20 miles north of Boston. The North Shore Gang Task Force—made up of the FBI, the Massachusetts State Police, the Lawrence...
