Troopers Treated for Smoke Inhalation

Mount Olive Township, N.J. – Two off-duty state troopers rushed into a burning home and rescued a woman who was trapped inside, after they encountered a house fire on their way home from work on April 28.

Troopers Adam Gonzalez and Justin Storie had just completed their shift at Troop “B” Netcong Station when they noticed dark smoke billowing from a home on U.S. Highway 206 at approximately 7:30 p.m. Without hesitation, they immediately stopped to render aid. Troopers Gonzalez and Storie were able to gain access into the residence through the front door, where they encountered heavy, black smoke.

Once inside, they announced themselves as State Police and began searching the residence. Josephine Maulback, 51, heard the troopers inside and began calling for help. Working as a team, they were able to locate the victim and navigate their way through the near blackout conditions before the house became fully engulfed.

Both troopers were treated at Morristown Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation and minor cuts and abrasions. Josephine Maulback was taken to Hackensack Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Mount Olive Police Department.
