Garfield Park Academy Educator

Willingboro, NJ – Garfield Park Academy, a private school serving students with disabilities, has announced that Roberta Bankston-Leconey was recently recognized as regional Paraprofessional of the Year by ASAH, a statewide association of private schools serving students in need of special education.

Bankston-Leconey has been with Garfield Park Academy for more than a decade. She began her career as a one-to-one instructional aide and is now the lead facilitator in her classroom. She is a mentor and has earned the respect of her colleagues and the administration.

“Roberta is a caring, dedicated and long standing member of the GPA family. She is a team player and is always supportive of the rules and expectations that have been developed by the teacher in the room,” said Dr. Steven Morse, Superintendent of Garfield Park Academy.

As a para-professional at Garfield Park Academy, Bankston-Leconey uses the Teaching Family Model to help students with emotional and behavioral disabilities learn. Students themselves have praise for Bankston-Leconey saying, “she always gives good advice,” and “when we have a setback, she is always there for us and believes in us.”

“Roberta has the ability to put her students at ease and make them feel supported and important both in school and in their outside lives,” added Morse. “She epitomizes the qualities, professionalism and character that have made her an integral part of Garfield Park Academy.

The award was given before a crowd of nearly 1,000 attendees at ASAH’s annual conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
