Officer Robert Shea was on directed patrol addressing quality of life issues in the area of Mount Ephraim Avenue and Dayton Street shortly after 8 p.m. when he observed a male and female suspect involved in a hand-to-hand drug transaction. Officer Shea approached to investigate and the male suspect – James Dorton, 30, of Westville – refused to cooperate and remove his hands from his pockets.
As Officers Shea, Stephen Walters and Aaron Roselli attempted to arrest Dorton, he resisted and struggled against them. During the struggle, Dorton grabbed the handle of Officer Shea’s gun in its holster, creating an extremely dangerous and volatile situation. The officers were able to place Dorton under arrest without further incident and during the arrest, Dorton was found to be in possession of PCP.
Dorton was charged with Resisting Arrest, Attempt to Disarm a Law Enforcement Officer and Possession of a CDS. He was remanded to the county jail with bail set at $115,000 cash or bond.
The female suspect – Amanda Martin, 21, of Philadelphia – was charged with Loitering to Commit a CDS Offense. She was issued a summons and released.
