The Gloucester Township Police Department will be participating in the statewide 2015 “UDrive, UText, UPay” distracted driving enforcement campaign. This campaign takes place between April 1st and April 21st, 2015. As part of the initiative, the department was awarded a $5,000 grant by New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. The grant will be used to conduct high visibility patrols targeting motorist who engage in dangerous distracted driving behaviors such as talking on hand held cell phones and sending text messages while driving. This statewide campaign is part of a national effort to raise awareness to the dangers of distracted driving. April has also been designated as National Distracted Driver awareness month. In 2012, 3328 people were killed in distracted driving crashes. An estimated 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Recent DNREC scrap tire recycling drop-off day in Georgetown collects almost 39 tons of tires DOVER (March 30, 2015) – Delaware’s Scrap Tire Management Program, administered through DNREC’s Division of Waste & Hazardous Substances, recently sponsored its 14th scrap tire drop-off day in the state and netted 38.81 tons of old and disused tires for recycling. The March 21 event in Georgetown removed some 3,100 scrap tires from the state’s landscape where they lay as potential health and environmental hazards. The drop-off days provide Delaware residents with an opportunity to recycle scrap tires while helping to reduce the environmental and health hazards associated with piles of scrap tires in communities. The program is funded by a fee of $2 per tire on the sale of new tires in the state. Newswise — Las Vegas, NV – Delaying rotator cuff surgery on patients with shoulder stiffness may not be necessary, according to research presented today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s (AOSSM) Specialty Day. “Our study compared results for 170 patients who received rotator cuff surgery with 25 who underwent an additional glenohumeral joint capsule release procedure to relieve stiffness at the time of surgery,” commented Jordan McGrath, lead author from St. George Hospital in Sydney, Australia. “Both groups reported significant improvements in range of motion, pain, and function after surgery.” A glenohumeral joint capsule release involves arthroscopically manipulating a patient’s shoulder under anesthesia. “Physicians may be inclined to postpone surgery on patients with shoulder stiffness,” commented McGrath, “but our research suggests that may not be the best treatment approach.” The group receiving both procedures also saw no re-tear of the shoulder two years post-op, as compared to 20%... DOVER (March 27, 2015) – Prior to the start of Delaware’s 2015 spring wild turkey season, youths aged 10 to 15 and non-ambulatory disabled hunters will have a special one-day turkey hunt opportunity on Saturday, April 4. Youth and disabled hunters will be able to hunt wild turkeys on private property, state wildlife areas and state forest lands. Hunters ages 13 to 15 must have a valid Delaware junior hunting license and must have completed a hunter education course, as well as a Division of Fish and Wildlife-approved turkey hunter safety class. Hunters age 10 to 12 are exempt from these requirements. NEWARK, NJ—A Newark man was sentenced today to 144 months in prison for his role in a shotgun carjacking in Little Falls, New Jersey, on Oct. 30, 2011, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced. Hanzah Darby, 26, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton to an indictment charging him with one count of theft of a motor vehicle by force, violence, and intimidation and one count of use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. TRENTON – Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman announced that a prominent Atlantic County, N.J., attorney who specialized in elder law was sentenced to state prison today for defrauding elderly clients of millions of dollars and laundering the funds through various accounts, including her attorney trust account. Last week, the Division of Criminal Justice obtained an indictment charging the owner of an in-home senior care company, her sister and three other defendants in connection with the fraud.Barbara Lieberman, 63, of Northfield, was sentenced today to 10 years in state prison, including 3 ½ years of parole ineligibility, by Superior Court Judge Michael A. Donio in Atlantic County. Lieberman pleaded guilty on Nov. 3 to an accusation charging her with first-degree money laundering. Volume XX No.13: March 27, 2015 Just before leaving for a two-week recess, the House passed a bill aimed at permanently solving a long-standing budget challenge. A failed effort to rein in rising Medicare costs from nearly two decades ago led Congress to repeatedly enact one or two year “patches” preventing scheduled payment cuts for Medicare providers. The new legislation gets rid of that pesky inconvenience, but it’s hard to see this as a fiscally responsible solution to a long-vexing problem. Instead it’s the most recent instance of Washington being incapable of making tough decisions. To rein in taxpayer costs for physicians’ services under Medicare, lawmakers created a Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula as part of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. JANQUART/MARCH 25, 2015 BOISE (CN) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service cannot use Canadian land to claim that it's providing enough habitat for endangered caribou, a federal judge ruled Monday. U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge said Fish and Wildlife must reopen its final rule for designated caribou habitat for public comment. The Center for Biological Diversity led a lawsuit filed by several environmental groups against the federal agency, challenging its 2012 final rule designating more than 30,000 acres in Washington and Idaho as critical habitat for the southern Selkirk Mountains population of woodland caribou, also known as the Selkirk Mountain Caribou. The species was listed as endangered in 1983. Fishman announced. Jonathan Thomas, a/k/a “Life,” 39, of Asbury Park, New Jersey, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Peter G. Sheridan in Trenton federal court to an information charging him with one count of conspiring to distribute heroin. In March 2014, 20 other alleged members of the drug trafficking organization of which Thomas was a member were charged by criminal complaint with conspiring to distribute heroin. WINSLOW TOWNSHIP NJ (March 24, 2015)--On Monday March 23, 2015 at 10:09PM Winslow Township Police were dispatched to Sicklerville News for the report of a fight between the store clerk and a customer. Responding officers located the clerk inside of the business. He sustained minor injuries which required medical attention. The investigation revealed the clerk was working behind the counter when he was violently attacked by an unidentified black male. The suspect savagely beat the clerk about his head and body while threatening the clerk with a pair of scissors. The clerk fought the suspect back causing him to drop the scissors. By Julie Rovner March 24, 2015 Women outnumber men in the nursing profession by more than 10 to 1. But men still earn more, a new study finds. The report in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association found that even after controlling for age, race, marital status and children in the home, males in nursing out-earned females by nearly $7,700 per year in outpatient settings and nearly $3,900 in hospitals. Even as men flowed into nursing over the past decades, the pay gap did not narrow over the years studied: 1988 to 2013. According to the Census Bureau, men made up about 9 percent of registered nurses in 2011, roughly a three-fold increase from 1970. WINSLOW TOWNSHIP (March 23, 2015)At approximately 4:40 pm on Monday, March 23, officers were dispatched to the Sicklerville section of Winslow Township for a robbery. The juvenile victim advised two juvenile suspects hit him in the head with a rock and stole his bicycle. The victim required medical attention for several lacerations to the head. Patrolman Justin Connor located the two suspects and recovered the stolen bicycle. The juveniles were charged with 1st degree armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. The juveniles were lodged into Camden County Lakeland Juvenile Facility. Bowe Bergdahl faces the possibility of life in a military prison for charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, the U.S. Army revealed on Wednesday. Both charges carry the possibility of a dishonorable discharge, demotion, forfeiture and imprisonment. The misbehavior count could lead to life imprisonment, and desertion has a maximum term of five years. Bergdahl, the last U.S. prisoner of war in Afghanistan, fell into Taliban hands shortly after leaving his combat outpost in the Paktika province on June 30, 2009. Narcotic Detectives conducted an investigation in the Sicklerville section of Winslow Township on March 24 and arrested Darrell Murray for possession and distribution of Oxycodone pills. The investigation led detectives to Murray’s residence in Chesilhurst and the following items were recovered: M.A.C. 11 assault weapon, semi-automatic handgun, 375 Oxycodone pills, marijuana, CDS paraphernalia. The street value of the pills recovered is over $11,000. Approximately $5000 was also seized from Murray. Murray was charged with possession of CDS, distribution of CDS, possession of assault weapon, unlawful possession of handgun, unlawful possession of high capacity magazine and possession of CDS paraphernalia.
