Recent DNREC scrap tire recycling drop-off day in Georgetown collects almost 39 tons of tires DOVER (March 30, 2015) – Delaware’s Scrap Tire Management Program, administered through DNREC’s Division of Waste & Hazardous Substances, recently sponsored its 14th scrap tire drop-off day in the state and netted 38.81 tons of old and disused tires for recycling. The March 21 event in Georgetown removed some 3,100 scrap tires from the state’s landscape where they lay as potential health and environmental hazards. The drop-off days provide Delaware residents with an opportunity to recycle scrap tires while helping to reduce the environmental and health hazards associated with piles of scrap tires in communities. The program is funded by a fee of $2 per tire on the sale of new tires in the state. The fee is diverted to the Scrap Tire Management Fund, a matching fund and program created to clean up longstanding...

NEW JERSEY POLICY PERSPECTIVE RELEASE Transparency and accountability for the state's fiscal and economic policy. Here's the quick rundown: Fixing Corporate Tax Subsidy Reporting NJPP has been an outspoken leader in calling for the state to report on the outcomes of corporate tax breaks. Last week, these efforts bore fruit: Lawmakers sent a bill to the governor's desk that could - finally - lead New Jersey to start publicly reporting on details such as how much companies received in tax credits, how many jobs they produced, what those jobs paid and more. The governor should swiftly sign this common-sense legislation to better inform the policy debate over this single-minded economic growth strategy. For more, check out NJPP's Sunday Star-Ledger op-ed, our backgrounder on the legislation and news coverage in the Bergen Record. Improving the Budget Process In 2014, NJPP and our partners brought to light a disturbing fact: New Jersey...

Newswise — Las Vegas, NV – Delaying rotator cuff surgery on patients with shoulder stiffness may not be necessary, according to research presented today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s (AOSSM) Specialty Day. “Our study compared results for 170 patients who received rotator cuff surgery with 25 who underwent an additional glenohumeral joint capsule release procedure to relieve stiffness at the time of surgery,” commented Jordan McGrath, lead author from St. George Hospital in Sydney, Australia. “Both groups reported significant improvements in range of motion, pain, and function after surgery.” A glenohumeral joint capsule release involves arthroscopically manipulating a patient’s shoulder under anesthesia. “Physicians may be inclined to postpone surgery on patients with shoulder stiffness,” commented McGrath, “but our research suggests that may not be the best treatment approach.” The group receiving both procedures also saw no re-tear of the shoulder two years post-op, as compared to 20%...

CATHOLIC LEAGUE March 30, 2015 Bill Donohue comments on reaction to Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA): The federal RFRA was passed in 1993, and since that time thirty states have adopted their own RFRA, or a variation of it. These laws have not engendered a single act of discrimination against any American, yet when Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed his own state's law protecting religious liberty, critics went berserk. "Bill Allows Businesses to Reject Gay Customers" said CNN. ABC-host George Stephanopolous sounded the same alarms, and pointedly refused to ask Pence about the law's positive impact on religious liberty. Similarly, at today's press conference, Indiana's top two lawmakers were asked many questions about gays, but not religious rights. Former NBA star Charles Barkley is urging a boycott of Indiana. GenCon, the gaming company, is threatening to leave Indiana, and Angie's List is putting its planned campus expansion project in...

by Bill Donahue March 27, 2015 Bill Donohue comments on remarks made by Georgia State Representative Jason Spencer about the Archdiocese of Atlanta: Georgia is considering a bill, the Hidden Predator Act, that would lift the statute of limitations for two years on civil suits filed against alleged sexual abusers. It is rightly being opposed by the Archdiocese of Atlanta, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and other organizations. As Catholics have seen over and over again, when state legislatures suspend the statute of limitations, they almost never apply to the public schools, even though that is where most of the molestation occurs. Georgia is no different. So we know what the agenda is. One of the Georgia lawmakers who favors the bill is Rep. Jason Spencer. But he is not content to voice support for it—he is waging a bigoted anti-Catholic campaign against the Atlanta archdiocese. In recent days he...

Crossposted from Environmental Justice in Action By Lena Adams Kim Father Didik of St. Thomas Aquinas church is one of the 15 Barrel Keepers who manage the system of oil collection barrels. The oil he’s pouring will become biofuel, compost, and soap. It all started Thanksgiving Day 2013, with my daughters frantically yelling, “The basement is flooding!!!” A visit from the plumber, yards of ruined carpeting, and $900 later, it was clear that cooking oil clogging my kitchen drain was the culprit. And so I did what many do after experiencing the horrors of home damage – I complained to everyone who would listen. My tale of woe reached Indah, a parent in my kids’ schoolyard. Indah, a journalist of Indonesian descent, mentioned how families in her immigrant Indonesian community in South Philadelphia were grappling with the same clogged pipes and costly repairs, yet unlike me, were often unaware of...

Volume XX No.13: March 27, 2015 Just before leaving for a two-week recess, the House passed a bill aimed at permanently solving a long-standing budget challenge. A failed effort to rein in rising Medicare costs from nearly two decades ago led Congress to repeatedly enact one or two year “patches” preventing scheduled payment cuts for Medicare providers. The new legislation gets rid of that pesky inconvenience, but it’s hard to see this as a fiscally responsible solution to a long-vexing problem. Instead it’s the most recent instance of Washington being incapable of making tough decisions. To rein in taxpayer costs for physicians’ services under Medicare, lawmakers created a Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula as part of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. While fairly complicated, SGR essentially annually recalculates reimbursement rates to keep pace with inflation. This was fine for the first few years as payments went up annually. But...

Nearly $10 million worth of construction has been completed on enhancements in the park. This year, work focused on the north side of the Indian River Inlet. Enhancements to the south side were completed in 2014. The contract was awarded for $9.87 million, of which the Federal Highway Administration paid $7.06 million while the remaining funds came from state capital funds awarded to DelDOT. State and federal transportation funds were used because the footprint of the construction of the new Indian River Inlet Bridge utilized state park lands for bridge construction....

Washington, DC (March 26, 2015)– Today, Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ01) voted in favor of a bipartisan health care bill that will protect and strengthen Medicare for senior citizens while preserving health benefits for countless children and families throughout South Jersey. Supported by provider and beneficiary groups, the bipartisan Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (H.R. 2) replaces a flawed Medicare policy called the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) with a new payment and delivery model that will promote high-quality care while reducing costs. This permanent fix to the failed SGR formula will finally bring certainty to our seniors and their doctors while strengthening the Medicare system. Rather than continue providing short-term fixes to this growing problem, Congressman Norcross joined House leaders to replace the SGR with a more sustainable and responsible Medicare funding plan. “This bill solves a near 20-year problem that has repeatedly placed Medicare at risk,” said...

Male caribou in Alaska (Photo credit: Wikipedia) By PHILIP A. JANQUART/MARCH 25, 2015 BOISE (CN) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service cannot use Canadian land to claim that it's providing enough habitat for endangered caribou, a federal judge ruled Monday. U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge said Fish and Wildlife must reopen its final rule for designated caribou habitat for public comment. The Center for Biological Diversity led a lawsuit filed by several environmental groups against the federal agency, challenging its 2012 final rule designating more than 30,000 acres in Washington and Idaho as critical habitat for the southern Selkirk Mountains population of woodland caribou, also known as the Selkirk Mountain Caribou. The species was listed as endangered in 1983. The groups claim Fish and Wildlife modified the criteria in a 2002 draft final rule that would have designated some 227,000 acres as critical caribou habitat. The new criteria raised...

New hunters can beat the rush, get a license in time for gobbler season by taking a course this spring. Those who plan to purchase their first hunting license this year will need to make plans to attend a Hunter-Trapper Education course, and classes are being held at locations across the state, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Springtime is a great time to complete the course. Because the fall hunting seasons – and the corresponding rush for new hunters to become certified – still are months away, it can be easier to find a class now compared to later in the year. Plus, those who complete the class now, still will have time to buy a license and hunt in the upcoming spring gobbler season, and will be able to apply for a 2015-16 antlerless deer license before they sell out. To register for a course in your area,...

The report in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association found that even after controlling for age, race, marital status and children in the home, males in nursing out-earned females by nearly $7,700 per year in outpatient settings and nearly $3,900 in hospitals.
