SUSPECT WITH A WEAPON RESULTS IN SCHOOL LOCKOUT IN GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP NJ --On January 5, 2015 at approximately 0759 AM the 6a00d8341bf7d953ef0148c82c41aa970c-500wiGloucester Township Police Department responded to the Autumn Ridge Apartments to investigate a report of a dispute where a male party was allegedly in possession of a handgun. Arriving officers made contact with the caller who advised the male suspect fled prior to police arrival. Responding police officers were told the armed male fled towards a wooded area that borders the nearby C.W. Lewis Middle School.

An officer quickly located a male walking on Little Gloucester Road, who matched the suspect description, and upon attempting to speak with him he fled towards Cherrywood Apartments. After a foot pursuit the male, Jon A. Stefanides, was taken into custody and a search revealed several bags of heroin. No firearm was recovered, and it is not believed he was actually in possession of a firearm. One officer sustained an injury as a result of the foot pursuit and was taken to a local hospital for treatment and later released.

Based on the information received that the suspect was in possession of a handgun the C.W. Lewis Middle School and Highland Regional High School were placed in a security "LOCKOUT" (procedure that secures the building perimeter from an external threat, while normal school activities occur inside the school). After approximately 15 minutes, once the suspect was taken into custody, the LOCKOUT was lifted and normal school activities resumed.

Further investigation by GTPD detectives revealed that the accused, Stefanides, was in possession of a knife when he attempted to break into the victim’s apartment. Also it was found that the accused was sending out illicit sexual pictures of the victim and peering into the victim’s windows.

Charges: Resisting Arrest, Possession of CDS, Possession of Burglar's Tools, Fugitive from Justice, Weapons Offenses, Invasion of Privacy, Peering Into Windows, Attempted Burglary, Stalking, Terroristic Threats and Violation of a Restraining Order.
