COMMENTARY : Serving Our Lord from ‘the catacombs’

ABSECON ISLAND--We’ve all heard the stories about the early days of Christendom, where members of the church practiced their faith in catacombs. And while this general practice is ancient history, Joe and Bunny Franco of Ventnor are doing something similar — not just for their faith, but out of a true sense of stewardship. For the past 15 years, Joe and Bunny have run the food bank ministry at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, a 112-year-old church that grew from humble beginnings, when Augustinian Father Michael Sullivan celebrated Mass in a tiny wooden structure on Absecon Island in 1855, into the giant brick and mortar building that occupies a significant section of Pacific Avenue. The couple, married for 57 years, operates the food bank out of the church’s basement, a location they affectionately call “the catacombs.” A small door is located in the back of the church structure on Memorial... FBI ALERT: Ransomware on the Rise

FBI and Partners Working to Combat This Cyber Threat 01/20/15 Your computer screen freezes with a pop-up message—supposedly from the FBI or another federal agency—saying that because you violated some sort of federal law your computer will remain locked until you pay a fine. Or you get a pop-up message telling you that your personal files have been encrypted and you have to pay to get the key needed decrypt them. These scenarios are examples of ransomware scams, which involve a type of malware that infects computers and restricts users’ access to their files or threatens the permanent destruction of their information unless a ransom—anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars—is paid. Latest Ransomware Threat A fairly new ransomware variant has been making the rounds lately. Called CryptoWall (and CryptoWall 2.0, its newer version), this virus encrypts files on a computer’s hard drive and any external or shared drives to... Read more →

Random notes on NJ government: Stratford cop writes up fellow cop for drunk driving

by John Paff Stratford cop writes up fellow cop for drunk driving. I often report of incidents where police officers give preferential treatment to fellow officers. This is not one of those times. From reading a Camden County Prosecutor's Office "Special Prosecutions Summary Report" on-line here, I learned that an unidentified Camden Metro Police Officer was suspended for 47 days for having a motor vehicle accident while allegedly driving intoxicated in Stratford Borough (Camden County) on October 26, 2013. On January 16, 2015, I submitted an Open Public Records Act (OPRA) request to Stratford Borough and learned from documents provided that the police officer charged with drunk driving was Michael L. Harper, Jr. (Since drunk driving cases are routinely reported to newspapers' "police blotter" section by local law enforcement (example here), I don't feel that it's inappropriate for me to publicly identify Officer Harper.) Harper was charged with drunk driving... Read more →

Christie withholds NJ credit card records on travel costs

Chris Christie is refusing to release nearly $800,000 in American Express credit card bills for the travel costs of his state police security detail. The governor’s staff rejected a New Jersey Watchdog reporter’s request for the monthly statements, contending releasing the records would jeopardize Christie’s safety. The denial follows a New Jersey Watchdog report last week revealing the travel costs of the Executive Protection Unit have grown by 1,800 percent since Christie became governor in 2010. Those expenses have totaled $959,856, not including unreleased expense information for the fourth quarter of last year, according to state records. Much of the increase can be attributed to Christie’s frequent out-of-state trips for political and personal purposes. Last year, Christie traveled out-of-state more than 100 days while visiting 36 states, Mexico and Canada, primarily to help raise $106 million in campaign contributions as... Read more →

Supreme Court Takes Up Push to Let Gay Couples Marry Nationwide

By BARBARA LEONARD WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Friday to hold a hearing for four states that do not want to recognize same-sex marriages or grant licenses to such couples. Though the justices broke gay-rights ground in June 2013 with United States v. Windsor, that case dealt only with a federal law that the court found was unconstitutional for defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Many courts have since used that case as precedent for overturning state bans against same-sex marriage, and the latest crop of challenges concern whether these states violate the equal-protection rights of same-sex couples. In a brief order consolidating four cases for oral argument, the Supreme Court agreed to answer two questions: "1) Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex? 2) Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a... Justice for Six Slain Victims in Philadelphia

Extreme Case of Witness Intimidation This Philadelphia row house was firebombed by individuals who worked for Philadelphia drug trafficker Kaboni Savage. Four children and two adults, family members of a federal witness, died in the fire. The adjacent row homes were also damaged. 01/15/15 As far as witness intimidation goes, Philadelphia drug trafficker Kaboni Savage and members of his criminal enterprise appeared to corner the market on how far they’d go to silence anyone willing to testify against the organization. The most horrifying example of this was the brutal firebombing that resulted in the deaths of six members of a federal witness’ family in retaliation for his cooperation with law enforcement. But a long-term, multi-agency investigation eventually proved that Kaboni Savage was responsible for those six murders—and at least six others—and that he headed a drug trafficking enterprise that excelled in using violence and other criminal tactics against anyone who... Identity Theft Ring from New York Allegedly Steals $293,600 at Five Atlantic City Casinos

TRENTON – Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman announced that 12 New York residents were indicted yesterday for allegedly using 52 stolen credit cards in five Atlantic City casinos to perpetrate a cash advance scheme that stole $293,600 from banks that guaranteed the transactions. The Division of Criminal Justice obtained the indictment from the Atlantic County grand jury, which charged each of the 12 New Yorkers with second-degree conspiracy, second-degree identity theft, second-degree theft by deception and third-degree fraudulent use of a credit card. The indictment alleges that over the course several days in May 2011, 10 of the defendants entered the casinos and conducted the cash withdrawals at the Showboat, Tropicana, Caesars, Harrah’s and Bally’s casinos. When they allegedly conducted the transactions, they presented their legitimate identification but used the fraudulent credit cards; those credit cards were embossed with their name, but the magnetic strip embedded on the card... GIRLS BASKETBALL : Rams 47 Lions 26

Bleacher Creatures (photo courtesy Bruce Darrow) GLOUCESTER CITY NJ (January 17, 2015)– Decked out in gold T-shirts and on their feet for the entire game, the Bleacher Creatures student section from Gloucester Catholic High School filled the stands behind one basket. The River Rats from Gloucester City High School formed a whiteout standing on the stage at the other end. In between, there was not an available inch of real estate in any of the four rows of bleachers that extended the length of the court on each side, and spectators not lucky enough to snag a seat stood three-deep in the four corners of the gym and strained their necks to catch a glimpse of the action. It is one of the best atmospheres in South Jersey girls basketball: Gloucester vs. Gloucester Catholic. COMMENTARY: Meet The Real Censors

by Bill Donohue On October 13, 1998, I held a demonstration in the street outside the theater that hosted "Corpus Christi," the Terrence McNally play that depicted Christ having sex with the apostles. I did not seek to have the government censor the play, but there was a protest of my right to protest the play. The New York Times commented on my demonstration: "The protest began with a fiery speech from William A. Donohue, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. Holding a bullhorn inside an area barricaded by the police, Mr. Donohue shouted criticisms at the opposition. 'You are the real authoritarians at heart,' he said. 'We're the ones that believe in tolerance, not you phonies.'" The Times noted that I assembled 2,000 people on a rainy night and was greeted by a counterdemonstration of 300. Who protested my right to protest? People for... Read more →

COMMENTARY: The Fiscal State of the Union

Volume XX No.3: January 16, 2015 Article II of Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution directs that the President “… shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” President George Washington gave the first State of the Union speech in 1790. And whether delivered in writing or in person (as has been the case since early in the 20thCentury) it’s an opportunity for the Chief Executive to expound on their principles and policies and argue for their approach to governance over the next year. One thing you can almost be certain of is that at some point the President will indicate that the state of the union is strong. Then there will be various stories about certain people sitting in the gallery above the House floor that can help... Read more →

Depression, Behavior Changes May Start in Alzheimer’s Even Before Memory Changes

Newswise — MINNEAPOLIS – Depression and other behavior changes may show up in people who will later develop Alzheimer’s disease even before they start having memory problems, according to a new study published in the January 14, 2015, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. “While earlier studies have shown that an estimated 90 percent of people with Alzheimer’s experience behavioral or psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety and agitation, this study suggests that these changes begin before people even have diagnosable dementia,” said study author Catherine M. Roe, PhD, of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo., and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. The study looked at 2,416 people age 50 and older who had no cognitive problems at their first visit to one of 34 Alzheimer’s disease centers across the country. The participants were followed for up... Read more →
