By Senator Mike Lee/ Republican senator from Utah The Daily Signal A good primary and secondary education is the cornerstone of the American Dream: it prepares us for economic and personal success and facilitates our pursuit of happiness. But too often the history of America’s public school system has been a story of dashed hopes, deferred dreams, and unfulfilled promises. Hopes of parents—that the local school system would prepare their kids to climb higher than they ever could. Dreams of students—that their teachers would inspire and believe in them. And promises of policymakers—that more money would fix a fundamentally broken system. Millions of low-income families who are stuck in underperforming schools have no way out and no way to choose something better. These families are not just let down by our nation’s dysfunctional education policy—they are trapped by it. Providing a solid education for the next generation is, as Abraham...

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP (January 29, 205)--The Gloucester Township Police Department and the Camden County Board of Freeholders partnered together to lower the speed limit on Somerdale Road from 40 mph to 35 mph. The new 35 mph speed limit signs are being installed on Thursday January 29th and take effect immediately. Variable message boards will also be in place notifying drivers of the speed limit change. by Bishop Dennis Sullivan Bishop of the Camden Diocese There is a large attractive billboard located on Route 130 South at the Brooklawn Circle. It looms over the road. Its colorful graphics are eye catching and its message riveting. It certainly did that for me and for my two companions as we recently drove past that intersection. It caught our attention. Ten baby fingers are displayed with this message: “I have unique fingerprints nine weeks from conception.” Think about it. Those unique and life-lasting human markings on the skin, fingerprints, are already in place at the ninth week of the life of a baby in the womb of his or her mother. Human fingerprints are absolutely individual; no two sets of fingerprints among the entire human race are alike. In the beginning of the third month of pregnancy that unique human identification is in place on the fingers, a personal...

By CHRIS FRY DISPLAYED HERE WITH PERMISSION http://www.courthousenews.com HACKENSACK, N.J. (CN) - Tenants displaced from last week's massive residential apartment fire along the Hudson River in Edgewater, N.J., claim in court that the lack of sprinklers in attics of their complex and use of lightweight wood construction "may have accelerated the spread of the fire." The class action against Avalon Bay Communities in Bergen County Superior Court comes just days after a Jan. 21 fire burned to the ground the 408-unit luxury housing complex known as Avalon Bay at Edgewater, constructed in 2002. Citing New York Times coverage of the fire, the residents say maintenance workers sparked the fire while using a blowtorch in the basement of the complex to fix a plumbing issue. The fire displaced more than 1,000 people, half of them permanently, and completely destroyed 230 units, according to the complaint. Both of the class action's named...

Sunday, March 08, 2009 TIPS AND SNIPPETS BY William E. Cleary Sr. A source told me recently that Mayor and Council have requested all departments to put together a list of names of three people with the less seniority. Officer William Johnson Jr. , president of PBA Local 40 was asked to clear up some of the rumors surrounding the grievances filed by the union. "We have filed over 13 grievances in the past year and a half. These grievances were filed in response to changes in working conditions that was made by the Chief (Crothers) without negotiating with the PBA prior to...

Case Highlights FBI’s Commitment to Anti-Trafficking Efforts 01/27/15 The young Ukrainian men and women—many of them out of work and with few prospects—were promised good-paying jobs in the United States. But instead of living the American dream, they were thrust into a nightmare of violence, threats, and forced servitude. For years, five brothers who ran a human trafficking organization victimized dozens of unwitting Ukrainians, underscoring the reality that modern-day slavery exists in the United States and around the world—and requires a strong response by governments and law enforcement. In recognition of that fact, and to speak out for the victims, January has been declared National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month by the U.S. government. Human trafficking can take many forms, from forced servitude to sexual exploitation of children, and the FBI is fighting these crimes on every front (see sidebar). Although Ukrainian trafficking victims were told they would gain...

Chris Christie has formed a political action committee to raise money, hire a staff and fund his campaign trips. For New Jersey taxpayers, the bad news will be an increase in Christie’s out-of-state political sojourns and the cost of the state police protection details that travel with the governor.
