A Byte Out of History: The Bureau’s Role During Early World War I Years

12/15/14 A badge from the Bureau of Investigation, as the FBI was called from 1909 to 1935. When war broke out in Europe a hundred years ago—in 1914, to be exact—the U.S. declared its neutrality, and U.S. investigative agencies like the Bureau of Investigation (the precursor to the FBI) had little role to play. As the conflict escalated, though, American munitions, food, and other goods became a point of contention. Great Britain and its allies tried to purchase all they could afford from the U.S. to bolster their effort. But Germany and its allies, blockaded by British ships, took up submarine warfare to try and prevent their enemies from benefiting from American trade and turned to sabotage, espionage, propaganda, and other intelligence tactics to succeed. The U.S. government’s response was divided. On the one hand, the Treasury Department’s Secret Service sought to pursue German spies and their agents in the... Read more →

The authors, led by Paul MacLean, PhD, and Rena Wing, PhD, reinforce that maintaining weight loss over the long term can be a major challenge. They recommend a number of novel approaches to improve obesity therapeutics, including more emphasis on an individualized approach to weight-loss treatments and maintenance, and the integration of physiology and behavioral psychology to identify effective and sustainable interventions. Dick Cheney: 'It's a Crock, It's Not True...

Sunday, 14 Dec 2014 10:27 AM By Greg Richter Former Vice President Dick Cheney has called the controversial Senate committee report on "enhanced interrogation techniques" both "hooey" and "full of crap" in interviews over the past week. On Sunday, he added that it was a "crock" and said he'd authorize the same tactics again "in a minute" to prevent another 9/11-type attack. Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," Cheney disputed that the techniques, including waterboarding, were torture, as Senate Democrats and Republican Sen. John McCain maintain. "Torture to me, Chuck, is an American citizen on his cell phone making a last call to his four young daughters shortly before he burns to death in the upper levels of the Trade Center in New York City on 9/11," Cheney told "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd. Cheney blasted the notion of "moral equivalence" between terrorism and American actions. "The Senate has... Read more →

But with so many choices out there -- including a seeming bombardment of online offers -- you need to be aware that you're also sending a message about yourself with every gift that's unwrapped. The right gift, as consumer behavior expert Kit Yarrow has written, "can enhance connections between people." A really bad one... . . .Well, we've probably all distanced ourselves from someone whose obviously inappropriate present screamed "clueless." Here's what these "wow" gifts say about you: * I'd rather be safe than sorry. Most women would be thrilled to receive a ginormous bottle of expensive perfume. PUBLIC POLICY CONSENSUS EXPLAINS NEW JERSEY’S RISE IN POVERTY

December 14, 2014 by Richard Miner inShare1 A review of reports published over the course of 2014 on New Jersey would suggest that the Garden State take on some serious New Year’s resolutions. The number of poor persons in New Jersey increased from about 935,000 to just less than 1 million compared to a nation-leading 63,600 between 2012 and 2013, according to U.S. Census figures. New Jersey joined New Mexico and Washington as the only three states to see significant increases in their rates of poverty between those years. Although the poverty rates increased across the Greater New York tri-state area during the last recession, those rates leveled off in New York and Connecticut after the recession. On the other hand, New Jersey’s overall statewide poverty rate is 11.4 percent, which is below both the national average of 15.8 percent and New York’s poverty rate which was nearly unchanged at... Milton Miller IV Off to Prison for Robbery; Used Baseball Bat as a Weapon

WOODBURY NJ-- Milton E. Miller IV, of Woodbury NJ, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery of a Woodbury man at the victim’s apartment on 7/23/14 using a baseball bat as a weapon, was sentenced today (12/12) to five years in New Jersey state prison. The sentence requires Miller to serve 85 percent of the prison term before he can be considered for parole, Superior Court Judge Kevin T. Smith said, noting that the defendant seemed to have learned little from a long history of criminal offenses. “You would hope he would learn from his mistakes, but at the age of 40, he has committed his most serious and significant offense,” Judge Smith said. The robbery and beating of the victim appears to have been motivated by revenged involving a woman both men knew, the judge said. A codefendant in the case, William L. The team has been caring for and working with the bird since she was found with a wing injury last March in Baltimore. Before her send-off, the owl was outfitted with a small tracking device so her travels could be chronicled through Project SNOWstorm. The owl, now referred to as Delaware, was initially banded along the Delaware Atlantic shore last December and presumably spent the winter somewhere in the mid-Atlantic region. “We are quite pleased to finally return this beautiful owl to the wild,” said David Brinker, DNR central region ecologist. “Her recovery is the culmination of several months’ work by a number of passionate and talented wildlife experts.” The injured female was rescued by DNR staff at Martin...
