Carlos Rojas, 24, won’t be eligible for parole for at least 17 years following a sentence imposed by Superior Court Judge Robert J. Gilson in Morristown, according to Morris County Prosecutor Frederic Knapp. A jury found Rojas guilty on Oct. 30 of aggravated manslaughter, kidnapping and other offenses related to the Aug. 3, 2011 killing.

Police say Rojas killed a 27-year-old friend, Esteban Hernandez, who also lived in North Bergen, by repeatedly striking him in the head with a hammer. The killing occurred at a Fairview home where Rojas worked for a man who ran an auto-repair garage, authorities have said. The victim’s body was found in the trunk of a car in a wooded area of Lincoln Park one day later.
