CHEER:Joe Matter, of Gloucester City, was honored recently in Field and Stream magazine as a Hero of Conservation. The article reads in part, Joe has spent his life with a shotgun in hand, bird hunting in NJ. Over the years, Matter started to see a decline in local bobwhite quail, and in 2007, he formed the NJ Quail project to help increase the populations. The group has successfully rehabilitated over 1000 acres of area farmland in one year, and they hope to implement a quail stocking program in the near future.
JEER: After raising the bridge tolls in September 2008 from $3 to $4, the
Delaware River Port Authority promised they would desist from funding capital improvements. Four months later… January 23, the board voted in favor of contributing $5 million to the City of Camden for three projects in that community. At the same meeting they gave $6 million to the City of Philadelphia; $2.5 million to build a restaurant at Franklin Square and $3.5 million to build an exhibit at the President’s House.
CHEER: To all the people who have donated igloo houses, blankets, and straw to help keep the feral cat colony on Charles Street safe and warm.
CHEER: Brooklawn's own Two Street Stompers who came in First place at the 2009 Philadelphia Mummers Parade in the Comic Brigade Division. Extra special cheer to Jim Meehan, Stephen Young, Tom Young, Kevin Young and Robert Young whose hard work and dedication lead the group to their win. The group was 100+ strong this year consisting of family and friends.
CHEER: To Gloucester City Patrolman Robert Kraft for helping Morris Court Apartment residents keep their parking lot free from abandon vehicles.
CHEER:To all the good folks at Lighthouse Baptist Church who celebrated their 16th Anniversary on Sunday, January 4th 2009. On January 3rd, 1993, Dr. Jim Doster moved from Middleburg Florida to start the Lighthouse Baptist Church with 8 people, who wanted a Bible preaching, independent, fundamental, separated, Baptist church in their town. Since those humble beginnings, Lighthouse has grown tremendously and has become an integral part of the spiritual and social fabric of Gloucester City. Its addiction program, "Reformers Unanimous" has helped 100’s of addicts achieve victory and the prison ministry, has helped 1000’s of inmates and their families. Over the years, Lighthouse has maintained its old-fashioned flavor, focusing on walking with God on a daily basis, singing the classic hymns and promoting godliness as the Prime Virtue. CONGRATULATIONS to all the folks at Lighthouse Baptist Church on 16 years of stellar service to the Lord and to the community.
JEER: To the law-breakers who scavenge throughout the city without a license. You can see them every night before trash day, cruising around looking for "LOOT". Some NOT ALL paw through our garbage and take what they want and leave the rest scattered across the sidewalks and streets.
"They claim they are helping the environment by recycling but in actuality they are only interested in "Making a Buck" for booze, cigs or whatever. Bootleg scavengers, GET A JOB and quit making a mess of our town!", Dr. James Doster.
CHEER: To the Borough of Bellmawr for having the courage to erect a sign on Creek Road that Wishes Everyone a Merry Christmas. This may not be politically correct and it may offend some people — atheists and non-believers — but who cares.
JEER-The bailout/stimulus law that Washington politicians have shoved down our throats in recent months is a travesty. Billions have been given away and because of mismanagement there are billions of dollars missing. It is highway robbery. Enough already! Write your Congressmen and Senator tell them you want a full accounting on where the money has gone before another dime is spent.
CHEER: The Mt. Ephraim Celebration Committee would like to thank all of the residents and organizations for their generosity in supporting our Toys for Tots Drive that was held on Dec. 13 during the Mt. Ephraim Fire Department’s Annual Parade. The Committee would also like to thank the staff of the Department of Public Works for their generous support and assistance. Due to the fact that we are a very generous community, we were able to fill a cargo van with new and unwrapped toys for area children.
CHEER: To the people from Gloucester City, Brooklawn, Mount Ephraim, Westville and Bellmawr who, despite tough economic times, donated gifts and holiday dinners to those families less fortunate so they could have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The turnout of volunteers meeting at the Gloucester City Swim Club was incredible. Thanks to coordinators Kathy Genzano, Shirley Cleary and Anne Peeke for a job well done, to the Gloucester City Rotary and Lions clubs, and to the corresponding Interact and Leo Club members from area high schools. "The motto “Service before Self” was quite evident this year, and it made me proud to be a resident of Gloucester City", Albert Countryman.
CHEER: To all firemen, be they volunteer or paid, and to all police officers for risking their lives to protect you and I on a daily basis.
JEER or CHEER? (you decide): The Parking Enforcement Officer retired at the end of December. Since then the Gloucester City Police Department has been lax in issuing tickets to violators of the No Parking signs. Violators of that ordinance contribute approximately $100,000 annually to the city’s treasury.
Contributing to this month’s column was: Frank Crosson, Dr. Jim Doster, Michelle Young, Dr. Joseph Joiner, Bernice Alibrando, Mildred Stubbs, Lee Lee Heitzmann and Albert Countryman.

Where is this feral cat colony? There should not be any in Gloucester City from what I was told.
Bill,
The other day I took a ride to our waterfront to see what if any improvements have been made and to see what we just spent 5 million dollars on. Well on my way back I went down 7th street between Charles and Jersey ave and I could not believe the condition of the road. I would describe it as one big pot hole a block long. It is an absolute disgrace to see a road in this city in that bad of shape. I wish I had a camera to take a picture.
Now that we are spending upwards of 5 million for this property what are we going to do with it. After the completion of this cleanup, if it happens, on this building are we going to level it and what is that going to cost the taxpayers? Then what another parking lot?
Not being a hunter, I have to wonder...
are you allowed to shoot bobwhite quail?
If the answer is no, then I understand why the declining species should be increased locally.
If the answer is yes, then F & S is honoring a man who is increasing the target, for the sport of it.
I'm not against hunting, if that's your interest that's ok with me.
Just wondering...
Feral cat colonies? You people have lost your minds if you believe your helping cats by spaying, feeding and neutering wild cats. Wait until the amount of cases of rabid animals starts to climb in your town.
It cost like $40,000 to tare down Dooley's and this building is alot bigger. If there is interest in this property by companies why didn't we let the interested parties buy it and use the city's money to lower taxes, hire more cops, settle contracts, fix 7th street, do the senior building the right way,pay the fire department their ot.....Didn't NICK say we had to tighten our $ belts or something like that. The Unions had to get more realistic, give up longivity or face layoffs.
We have money($5,000,000.00)for toxic land;but not enough to keep cops on the street?
Probably Moving
We can thank Bowie Johnson and Fred Schindler for the deplorable condition of seventh street. They have been taking care of the Politically Privileged for many years. Fred Schindler has ignored his duty/responsibility to maintain a properly designed sewer system.
A certain former resident used to boast how he avoided connecting to the city sewer system so as to avoid the high connection fee and the county approval process by connecting his sewer system into the storm drain system that dumps straight into the Delaware River.
All it takes is a Public Works Department Head who wants political support and a Water Department Head who is willing to break the law to get/keep a job. This guy never has straight answers to any questions including where his computers and tools are going. He is just ensuring the police has full time employment and job security.
The reason for the no paving is Bowie Johnson would have to periodically remove/replace the blacktop when the owners need to repair the line in the street due to lack of pitch.
If the COUNTY were to run a red or yellow dye check from the property to the two systems they would know where the sewage was going. You can't ask Fred Schindler to run the test because the water department has no dye. It went the same places the tools and computers went.
The COUNTY should have no problem gaining access to the property. It should be able to get approval from the Public Works Committee Councilwoman.
An Angel told us so
oh brother jja......another topic but the same old naysayer!!!!!!!!!!!

I for one say a jeer to the feral cat colony in town. How many other cities in South Jersey have feral cat colonies? Camden, Lindenwold, Gloucester City,...get the point. Any city that is trying to improve it's image should not allow a feral cat colony. Not a huge selling point, folks. I also say a big cheer to not having to "fear the sweeper" lady. In tough economic times, as our city council say, it is a blessing to not have to fight 20 of my neighbors for 6 parking spots on sweeper days for $25. They only have it on the west side of town anyway. Maybe if the city spent a few more dollars on actual salt to put on the roads instead of rocks and sand, we would'nt need as many sweeper days. Now this stuff will lay in the roadways for months, rocks get kicked up at cars, it fills up street drains, and now cars slide on the sand. Thanks for listening.
