Letters to the Editor: Achieving a Better Life Experience Act

When your child or loved one has an intellectual or developmental disability, you spend a lot of time worrying about the future. That is why I was very grateful that Congress passed and the President recently signed the Achieving a Better Life Experience Act also known as the ABLE Act. This legislation will allow individuals and families to save for long-term needs without jeopardizing an individual’s eligibility for critical federal entitlement programs like Medicaid. ABLE accounts will be set up similarly to 529 accounts that many families use to save for a child’s college education. The tax-advantaged savings accounts made possible by the ABLE Act can be used to pay toward a variety of needs including transportation, housing, employment support and assistive technology. My daughter Annika, who has developmental disabilities, is a pre-teen now but before I turn around she’ll be an adult. It gives me peace of mind to... Read more →

City of San Francisco and Nude Protestors Will Battle in Court

by William Dotinga SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - A federal judge handed Christmas gifts to both nudists and San Francisco officials on Wednesday, whittling down the 2-year battle over the city's ban on sidewalk nudity to two instances in which police targeted protesters at City Hall, and dismissing the rest of the suit. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted in November 2012 to prohibit "genital exposure" on all city sidewalks, plazas, parklets, streets and public transport, except during permitted activities such as the Pride Parade, Folsom Street Fair and Bay to Breakers race. Nudists struck back by filing a federal class action to prevent the ordinance from taking effect, claiming that nudity is an integral part of their personal and political expression and protected by the First Amendment. U.S. District Judge Edward Chen dismissed the case entirely in early 2013, finding San Francisco's ban narrowly tailored enough to permit some... Read more →

LETTERS: If Christie Wont Resign Start A Recall

In response to the recent poll story which found a majority of New Jerseyans wanting Gov. Christie to resign if he runs for President, New Jersey's Constitution sets up a long and complicated process for the recall of government officials, including the governor. For starters, 25 percent of registered voters must sign the petitions, within 320 days of initiating the process. However, just getting the ball rolling would focus media attention in New Jersey and across the country. That would lead to rattling Gov. Christie's cage, acting out and further damaging his image with voters, supporters and his party. If at that point he still feels that he's a viable candidate for any elective position, he'd be having delusions of grandeur. This, alone, might urge our "absentee governor" to resign and allow our lieutenant governor to bring the state back to normal. Don Lombardi Toms River Related articles Chris Christie schmoozes...
