COMMENTARY: Free Gas

Volume XIX No.47: November 21, 2014 Getting something for nothing is a pretty sweet deal. At least if you’re the one getting something. Not so much if you’re the one receiving nothing in exchange. Oil and gas companies are getting gas from federal lands and paying nothing for at least some of it. At least that what’s we documented this week. Oil and gas companies drilling on federal lands have avoided paying in excess of $380 million in royalties on the gas they have extracted over the past eight years. That’s a lot of money and it could be a lot more, because it’s based on self-reported data provided by the oil and gas industry. And that’s a lot of gas. By the American Natural Gas Alliance standards, the amount of royalty-free gas either consumed as fuel or lost by operators would be enough to meet the needs of every... Read more →

FBI: 20 Years Since Shooting Killed Two Agents, Police Sergeant

Honoring the Fallen 11/21/14 Two decades ago, on November 22, 1994, a lone gunman entered the headquarters building of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, D.C. and opened fire in a squad room, killing a police sergeant and two FBI agents. For those close to the fallen, who gathered today for a memorial service marking 20 years since the tragic event, it’s as if it happened yesterday. “Twenty years have passed, but our hearts are still heavy,” said former FBI Director Louis J. Freeh, who headed the Bureau in 1994. “Our hearts and memories still feel the pain of that day. It was a day that we will never forget and will always honor.” ‘That Fateful Day’ November 22, 1994 started like any other day at the District of Columbia Municipal Building, where FBI Agent John Kuchta worked on a homicide cold case squad with other agents and Metropolitan... O'Dowd. "Even experienced mushroom pickers can be fooled at times, so this warning needs to be given and taken seriously. Courthouse News Service BY CHARLY HIMMEL RICHMOND, Va. (CN) - The Virginian-Pilot newspaper sued the FBI claiming the agency is wrongly withholding information on the training-related deaths of two hostage rescue team members. In a lawsuit filed in the federal court in Norfolk, Va., the newspaper's publisher and reporter Scott Daugherty claim the FBI improperly documents related to the May 17, 2013, deaths of agents Christopher Lorek and Stephen Shaw during a training exercise. A subsequent appeal to the Department of Justice was also denied earlier this year, the complaint says. The accident occurred at the Critical Incident Response Group headquarters in Quantico, Va., where the special agents fell while "fast-roping" out of a helicopter during a counterterrorism training exercise.
