CNB HUNTING/FISHING NEWS: Conservation Districts to sponsor 2014 poster contest

DOVER (Sept. 17, 2014) – The Kent, New Castle and Sussex Conservation Districts are accepting entries now for their annual conservation poster contest based on the theme, “Dig Deeper: Mysteries in the Soil.” Deadline for entries is Friday, Nov. 7. Posters will be judged in the following grade categories: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. First, second and third place winners in each category will receive a cash prize valued at $50, $25 and $15, respectively. Entries also will be accepted from high school students (grades 9-12) in a separate category for computer generated/graphic design posters.
The annual conservation poster contest provides kindergarten through 12th grade students an opportunity to convey their thoughts about soil, water and related natural resource issues through art. It also highlights the educational outreach efforts of conservation districts and their state associations, auxiliaries, and agencies. The contest follows the annual Stewardship theme, which is developed and sponsored by the National Association of Conservation Districts.
Each of the Conservation Districts will submit their first place posters in each category for judging at the state level. State level winners will then be submitted to the national contest. Last year, Delaware’s winning poster in the 2-3 grade category went on to win first place in the national contest.
This year’s theme, “Dig Deeper: Mysteries in the Soil,” is a reminder that we all have a connection to this vital resource that lies beneath our feet. Soil teems with an incredible number of living organisms. Soil makes up the outer layer of the earth’s surface, nourishing the plants we eat, the animals we use for food and fiber, and the thriving underground kingdom of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, earthworms and other microbes that are critical to the planet’s food web. Soil is the foundation for many of the items we use in our daily life, such as food, clothing, clean water, our homes and more.
The name of the student, teacher, school and student’s grade level must be clearly and legibly printed on the back of the poster. Posters must be hand delivered or mailed flat in time to the meet the deadline to the Conservation District office in the county in which the student resides.
