Tom Richards, city manager of Harbor Springs, wondered “Where have all the citizens gone?” when the big budget issues come up. His complaint came during a provocative lecture at North Central Michigan College, by media law attorney Robin Luce Herrmann, who is a strong advocate for government transparency. “We can pass million dollar budgets and power sales contracts and so forth, but the only people I get...

Volume XIX No.39: September 25, 2014 TAXPAYERS FOR COMMON SENSE The Pentagon’s fancy new fighter, the F-35, is on pace to be the most expensive weapon acquisition in history. Not surprisingly, we keep an eye on the F-35 because of its eye-popping price tag. So we were appalled with a request from the Pentagon at the beginning of this month to shift funds from the so-called Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) fund, which is supposed to be for direct warfighting costs, to instead accelerate the purchase of eight F-35s, which considering they aren’t operational yet, aren’t doing any warfighting. Luckily, the...

(NewsUSA) - Playing outside isn't just for the kids. Pets love exploring the backyard as well, and while letting Fluffy and Fido out may cut down on fur balls on the carpet, they could be bringing unwanted guests back inside. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reminds homeowners to thoroughly check pets' fur for fleas and ticks after they've been out in the yard or at the park. These pet pests are known to spread diseases to both animals and humans, and can easily infest homes. Fleas are a very common problem for cats and dogs. Excessive scratching and red...
