A day of roller coasters and worship
Youth and adults from the Diocese of Camden — 750 of them — joined others from all five dioceses in the state for fun and faith May 18.
In all, 3,000 people attended the New Jersey State Catholic Youth Rally, held at Six Flags Great Adventure.
The day began with an opening presentation led by the Diocese of Camden that focused on the day’s Gospel, with Jesus telling his disciples that he is “the way, the truth, and the life.” Youth groups from Holy Cross Parish, Bridgeton, and Our Lady of Peace, Williamstown, led the prayer, with Deacon Arnaldo Santos from Holy Cross preaching and South Jersey band Paging Samuel leading all in praise and worship.
After hours of roller coasters and games, a closing Mass was celebrated by Bishop Arthur Serratelli of Paterson, with Father Allain Caparas, director of Catholic Identity at Gloucester Catholic High School, and other priests of New Jersey
“It’s great to see the young church coming together for the faith,” said Greg Coogan, director of Youth, Young Adult, and Campus Ministries for the diocese, noting that his office, and the diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry, sponsored scholarships covering the $45 fee for 28 youth from Bridgeton and Camden to attend the youth rally at Six Flags.
“We’re proud that our diocese can stand with the poor youth. It’s a strong commitment of our diocese,” he said.
