California, Oregon and Washington state will begin get the worst of it -- within 60 days. Folks out there HAVE to prepare, just in case. We tell you how. The image above, provided by the BBC, shows the "likely" scientific projection of radioactive waste flowing toward the west coast of North America from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Reactor meltdowns and explosions in Japan, which took place in March, 2011. The Protesters' Cry for Freedom

02/24/2014 The international scene in the past couple of weeks was supposed to be a smiling gathering of nations for the Olympics. That has been overshadowed by violence in Ukraine and Venezuela, where protesters are demanding leadership that would address their concerns of freedom, both personal and economic. Where is President Obama? Nile Gardiner, director of Heritage’s Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom, observes: The leader of the free world has been largely invisible as Ukrainian demonstrators are ruthlessly picked off by government snipers and left for dead, while Russian President Vladimir Putin vows that Ukraine will remain in Russia’s orbit. Obama’s approach to foreign policy, which Heritage experts have described as a “radical departure” from previous presidents, has relied heavily on international institutions and summits to address problems. “This flawed approach, with a fundamental rejection of the notion of American exceptionalism, is amply on display over the Ukrainian crisis,” Gardiner... January Construction Down 13 Percent

NEW YORK, Feb. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The value of new construction starts fell 13% in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $485.0 billion, according to McGraw Hill Construction, a division of McGraw Hill Financial. The downturn followed a healthy performance in December, which was the third highest month for total construction starts during 2013. January's retreat encompassed all three main construction sectors, with moderate declines reported for nonresidential building and housing, as well as a more substantial loss of momentum for nonbuilding construction (public works and electric utilities) after a particularly robust December. On an unadjusted basis, total construction starts in January came in at $34.1 billion, down 5% from the same month a year ago. The January statistics lowered the Dodge Index to 103 (2000=100), compared to a revised 118 for December and below the average Index reading of 110 for all of 2013. "The year... Read more →

Feb. 18, 2001: Dale Earnhardt and Daytona's darkest day

TOM JENSEN/FOX SPORTS NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, taken by official NASCAR photographer Darryl Moran (Photo credit: Wikipedia) February 18, 2001. Every NASCAR fan remembers where they were when they first got the news: Dale Earnhardt had died in the final turn of the final lap at Daytona. Even today, 13 years after he died, those words are painful to process. Whether you loved Earnhardt or loathed him -- and there were plenty of fans in both camps -- he was a larger than life character: Bold, cocky, talented, fiercely loyal to those close to him and indestructible. Or so we believed. I was there in Talladega when he rolled over and broke his collarbone. And when he inexplicably passed out on the first lap at Darlington. That time, I thought he really had died. He was unconscious on a stretcher and absolutely pale white as they carried him out. But... Read more →

NJ Loses Nearly $8 Million in Standoff Over Affordable Care Act Funds

NJSPOTLIGHT Banking and Insurance Commissioner Kenneth Kobylowski. New Jersey lost a $7.67 million federal Affordable Care Act grant yesterday as state and federal officials failed to reach agreement on how the money could be spent. The crux of the dispute appeared to be over Medicaid costs. While the state largely wanted to use the money to support expansion of the state’s Medicaid program, federal officials maintained that the grant must be used more directly to support the ACA insurance marketplace. The state received the grant in February 2012 for use in building a state insurance exchange. After Gov. Chris Christie announced a year later that the state would opt for a federal insurance marketplace, rather than a state-run one, state and federal officials began discussions about how the money could be spent. Yesterday was the deadline for the state to come up with an acceptable plan for using the money.... Read more →

August 29, 2007 By BILL BATES CNBNEWS.net (August 29, 2007)Mount Ephraim Police Chief Edward C. Dobleman announced that the department is implementing a new program to the borough. Residents and business owners will be able to contact the police to help with this quest. Tragically, the pedestrian accident rate has significantly increased statewide. Today, 85 percent are driven to school, resulting in congestion in school zones far beyond what the streets were designed to handle. MLK Cougars claim school's first-ever city basketball championship

February 23, 2014/Newsworks Sunday afternoon's Philadelphia Public League Championship tilt was not the best game that the MLK High Cougars boys basketball team played this season. But, when they corralled a rebound just before the buzzer to preserve a 46-44 win over the Constitution High Generals at the Liacouras Center, it became the most historic. After Constitution junior forward Ahmad Gilbert's last-second three-point attempt clanged off the front of the Cougars rim, MLK claimed its first-ever Public League title. It came in the same school year that their football-playing peers accomplished the same. "Just like we planned it, right?" asked MLK Principal William Wade somewhat facetiously while clutching a trophy, handed to him by Superintendent William Hite, once hoisted by the likes of Wilt Chamberlain and Rasheed Wallace. THE DO-NOTHING CONGRESS

The western front of the United States Capitol. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Oftentimes, people fret that Congress isn’t doing anything. But is that such a bad thing? The divide of the will of the people (that Congress is supposed to represent) from the priorities of lawmakers and the agenda of the executive branch has likely never been wider. If this sounds like hyperbole, it shouldn’t. Poll after poll continues to show that the American people are absolutely fed up with Washington and the institution that is Congress. Liberals may retort by saying the American people actually want Congress enacting more laws, but that’s really a clever reading of public polls that suggest people are looking for a reprieve (even a temporary one) from an ever-expanding federal government. The fact is that Congress does need intractability. With the exception of a few targeted pieces of legislation, Congress really needs just to lie... Read more →

The Don Corleone of the South Philadelphia Auto Repair Business Arraigned | Bigtrial.net

By George Anastasia For Bigtrial.net PHILADELPHIA PA (February 20, 2014)--Ron Galati, the Don Corleone of the South Philadelphia auto repair business, was arraigned earlier this week on murder-for-hire, conspiracy and witness intimidation charges. The wannabe wiseguy pleaded not guilty. He is being held without bail pending trial. He is also the target of two other investigations, an insurance fraud probe in Philadelphia and another murder-for-hire and fraud case in New Jersey. Galati, if the District Attorney's allegations prove true, has apparently turned an insurance fraud pinch that could have landed him in jail for from five to six years into an attempted murder-witness intimidation fiasco that could result in a prison sentence of up to 30 years. That's not a pleasant prospect for the 63-year-old mob associate who underworld sources say always talked a better game than he played. Koch Network Backed Group Pushing to Shift Allocation of PA Electoral Votes

By Carrie Levine Read more about CREW's research in the Philadelphia Inquirer: Ethics group says politics fueled GOP's quest to change voting rules In 2011, a new Pennsylvania nonprofit, All Votes Matter, began spending tens of thousands of dollars lobbying in favor of changing how Pennsylvania’s electoral votes are awarded to presidential candidates. Instead of awarding all 20 electoral votes to the winner of the state’s popular vote, the group wanted to allocate one vote to the winner of each of the state’s 18 congressional districts, with the remaining two electoral votes going to the winner of the popular vote. The plan was widely viewed as giving Republicans an opportunity to pick up some electoral votes in Pennsylvania, which was considered a battleground state. The proposal won support from several prominent Pennsylvania Republicans, including Gov. Tom Corbett and state House and Senate leaders, but others in the party opposed it,... Read more →

CREW: Tell The IRS To Close The Dark Mondey Loophole

(February 19, 2014)--For more than 50 years, the issue of 501(c)(4) groups abusing their "social welfare" status has been kicked down the road by the IRS. Finally, after torrents of bad publicity, others are starting to take notice, but the recent proposals fail to address the main issue. Current IRS regulations grant tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(4) of the tax code to groups “primarily engaged” in promoting social welfare, allowing up to half of their money to be spent on politics. The tax laws, however, require such groups to be “operated exclusively” for social welfare purposes. Today, CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington)filed comments with both the IRS and the Treasury Department criticizing these proposals for failing to close the regulatory loophole, but the IRS won't act without public pressure. Here's how you can help stem the tide of anonymous dark money pouring into our electoral system. You... Read more →

Bob Lonsberry: The Democrats are right, there are two Americas

The Democrats are right, there are two Americas. The America that works, and the America that doesn’t. The America that contributes, and the America that doesn’t. It’s not the haves and the have nots, it’s the dos and the don’ts. Some people do their duty as Americans, to obey the law and support themselves and contribute to society, and others don’t. That’s the divide in America. It’s not about income inequality, it’s about civic irresponsibility. It’s about a political party that preaches hatred, greed and victimization in order to win elective office. It’s about a political party that loves power more than it loves its country. That’s not invective, that’s truth. And it’s about time someone said it. The politics of envy was on proud display last week as the president said he would pledge the rest of his term to fighting “income inequality.” He notes that some people make... Read more →

by Blair Hickman ProPublica, Feb. 18, Sheryl Swingley has been the journalism internship coordinator at Ball State University for more than 20 years, where she also teaches journalism. We sat down to talk with her about paid and unpaid internships, the kind of advice she offers students and trends at Ball State – where she says students’ paid summer internships have dropped by nearly half. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. How have you seen the internship landscape change since you started at Ball State? I haven’t seen internships for journalism students, or even public relations or advertising students, change in terms of opportunities and what’s expected of them. Our students have always expected to be involved in producing real work. But what I have seen is fewer internships paying, and some internships still requiring students to work 40 hours [a week] for nothing. For the last... Read more →

Why Do Some Governments Struggle to Make Online Services Viable?

Recent audits reveal how poor strategic planning leads to lost opportunities for Government spending (Photo credit: 401(K) 2013) governments that are looking for new ways to deliver services at the lowest cost possible. BY TOD NEWCOMBE State and local governments have made significant improvements in how they use the Web to serve citizens. The Center for Digital Government has been highlighting the best websites for 18 years and describes last year's winning sites as "first-class" in terms of service delivery, productivity and performance. But some recent audits have revealed that many states and localities (along with the federal government) continue to struggle with how to build an online service that lets citizens and businesses transact with government in a simple and effective manner, and they lack a strategic plan for developing new services. The result can be confusion for many who want to interact with government online and lost opportunities... Read more →

Opinion: Looking Closely at the Dangerous Legacy of Commissioner Chris Cerf

NJ Spotlight MARK WEBER | FEBRUARY 14, 2014 Chris Cerf says he’s not leaving his post as New Jersey’s Commissioner of Education because of Bridgegate, and I believe him. When Cerf departs at the end of March, he’ll be continuing a pattern of sliding back and forth between the private and public sector that he’s engaged in over his entire career. Leaving for Rupert Murdoch’s Amplify -- or some similar corporate education outfit -- was the next, inevitable step for Cerf, no matter how many scandals may dog Gov. Chris Christie. In many ways, Cerf is the prototypical education “reformer”: he never taught in a public school, never earned a degree in education, and never ran a school building. More accurately, perhaps, Cerf is the prototype of a new sort of reformer, one who leaves a groundswell of resistance in his wake. After a few years of teaching at a... Read more →

Libraries Serve As Health Insurance Info Hubs

By Elana Gordon, WHYY FEB 14, 2014 What can’t librarians do? Many are now becoming health insurance guides. The buzz at the American Library Association's winter meeting recently wasn't just about the annual awards (a.k.a. the book award "super bowl"); the Affordable Care Act was also on the agenda. Libraries across the country have been trying to meet a growing demand for health insurance information. At the Free Library of Philadelphia’s central branch, library coordinator Nani Manion has started running twice-weekly enrollment clinics in the technology lab. Manion is one of 33 librarians in the Philly system who have undergone a five-hour training session to become certified application counselors. Catholic Star Herald: In thanksgiving for a generous pastoral response

Much is printed in the secular press about the faults and failings of our Catholic priests. Much grumbling goes on from the laity as well, especially when we are not encouraging, dialoguing with, praying or supporting these men enough. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly express my thanksgiving to Father John Vignone, of St. Katharine Parish in Egg Harbor Township, for his very generous and pastoral response to me on Dec. 23rd. I had been on my way to the local shopping mall to finish a last minute request for Christmas shopping. As I drove down the road, my cell phone signaled a text from my sister; a text that brought my heart to drop, as she was in a hospital room far away at the bedside of our imminently dying brother. I saw that I was in front of St. Katharine's and pulled in. Some gentlemen,... Read more →
